Brrrr!! Anyone else below freezing tonight?? Kinda worried bout the peeps. I know they're supposed to be more cold hardy than I give them credit for, but it's 28 degrees here!

I put a heat lamp on my silkies who went broody last week and are sitting in eggs. They don't have anyone else to snuggle with so I was more concerned about them.

For the 3rd or 4th night in a row below freezing! Single digits yesterday an the past 2 nights. Should make it into the teens tonight! Busy getting a good cover of beeding down. My geese prefer staying outside even in the snow. They prefer having some hay between the snow and their feet, though. Wondering how those guys in the Great White North manage? (Used to be one, but no birds, just dairy cattle and they spent the winter indoors). Have to put off setting eggs until the possibility if rolling blackouts are finished.

The Goose Local is making daily formal complaints. Conditions are not up to their usual standards. We are somehow directly responsible for it. Ponds, pools, head buckets all frozen solid and no one is moving to do anything about it. It's unfair, we are told. It's supposed to snow again tonight or tomorrow, but we won't get the 5" we got the other night with the ice. So they stand upon the frozen pools of ice and look at us with eyes full of questioning. and accusation.

Had a broody goose year before last who got a heat lamp. She had 2 other geese laying in the same nest. She had been on that nest for almost 2 months. She needed the extra warmth, too. Lessons learned.

Cold! Cold! Cold!

The past two days I have been fighting the cold too. Hand to work all day and then get home to a bunch of thirsty birds cause all the water is froze solid.

I would like to get a pair of OE game bantams. A hen and a roo. I want to get young ones to hand raise to make them as tame as possible. I am in Austin looking for someone within a couple hours of me that might have some. Crele in color is preferd. Anyone?

We haven't been above freezing in two days and still won't until mid-day tomorrow. I am LOVING the cookie tin water heater! A 60W bulb keeps the water liquid down to at least 18F. I only have to take water out to the dog. I'd make her a heater too, but she'd likely eat it.

On my list of Things Worth Every Penny: The 16 Gal heated water buckets with guarded (chew-protected) cords. That's why my birds will suffer with frozen-over ponds and head buckets. They have water, but not the Waterworld they're accustomed to. Also have a 3 gal bucket for my hospital pen if needed. I don't envy anyone having to go to work and come home to this stuff. Finally retired and working it full-time now, Much better! Valley Vet Naturals has the buckets. That cookie sheet heater works! We started out with that method for the 7 gal waterer we had and on an old metal rabbit pan. We had to use a heat lamp, but with cold like we've had this week, it still froze. Geese are a lot messier with water than chickens. These buckets were well worth the price. I think they were only $65.

Somehow these geese seem to have the idea that all this snow and ice is yet another remodeling project of ours. They do not care for it and petition us to replace the former decor at every opportunity. The novelty has worn off.

We don't get much snow in San Marcos, and these pictures were taken after the sun started melting it.
