Texas

I do understand most of your responses to my request, I have been teaching a lot about the care of the chicks since I started the eggs in the bator and I am requiring that they take the information sheet home and have it signed by the parents if it is okay for them to get a chick. I also expect them to at the very least bring me a picture of the place they plan to keep them. I am really not sure what we will do now because there are so few and my mentor teacher doesn't really want to keep them at the school perminantly either, but I know things will work out, just thought I would ask. For now we have 5 classroom chicks and we are going to experiment with feeding one group regular feed store feed and the others a higher protein "show feed" so the kids will see why they do what they do for "meat pen" chickens at the fair. (These are Agriculture students so they are already a little more knowledgeable than your average kids)

HOW IS THE WEATHER YOUR WAY? I AM IN DECATUR TEXAS JUST NORTH OF FORT WORTH. WE HAVE BEEN UNDER STORMS FOR 2 DAYS NOW. THE SURROUNDING TOWNS HAVE BEEN GETTING HAIL DAMAGES,AND LOTS OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGES BUT SO FAR WE HAVE BEEN OKAY. JUST THE HIGH WINDS AND RAIN. WE DID LOOSE POWER FOR ABOUT AN HOUR YESTERDAY. I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO GET SOME BAD WEATHER AT MY HOUSE BUT ALL WE GOT WAS JUST A FEW LARGE DROPS OF RAIN LOL. MY DAUGHTERS SAID IT REALLY RAINED IN TOWN AND THEY DID GET SOME HAIL BUT WAS NOT BAD. FROM MY HOUSE TOWN IS ONLY 15 MINUTES OR SO AWAY. HOPING YOU GET SOME RAIN.

Supposed to rain today but so far, nothing. Send some of that rain to Houston, PLEASE!!! (not the hail though. wow!)

I will see what I can do about sending some rain to Houston. WE have been surrounded again by some bad storms. There is a town a few hours away from us that got hit again with tornado's The town of Avalon. So guess hubby will be busy for a while doing roof estimates. I just say a prayer every time for those that just get hit hard with these crazy storms. I am hoping no more rain so my horse areas will dry up and the pens as well. I am thinking of adding some shavings to the pens just so they can at least have some dry pens to walk around in.

"On Wednesday... a dry cold front will bring breezy northwest winds
to all of south central Texas. A very dry airmass will filter into
the region throughout the day... with relative humidities falling
to 5 to 10 percent west of Highway 281 and near 10 to 20 percent
east of Highway 281 by early afternoon. The strong northwest winds
will decrease after sunset... but relative humidities will be slow
to recover overnight."

Sounds like an interesting class. I wish there were ag classes when I was in school.

I think this sounds like a really wonderful class and I bet you have sparked a real interest in keeping chickens in these kiddos. Keeping them in the classroom for awhile will really help them see a little more of the work that goes into keeping chicks / chickens. I bet the ones that find they are really interested in chickens will take the initiative and get some on their own.

You mention "meat pen"... I'm wondering, did you all hatch out broilers? Just curious...

Hey everyone!! Haven't posted in awhile, but going to try to make it a regular thing!! I read almost everyday, just don't post. Man I love this forum!! I'm about 9 miles north of Livingston and we got a storm Monday night. I guess it started about midnight and lasted an hour or so. The rain was great!! We just need more. Here are a picture of my "boys." Does anyone know where I could find some Marans, preferably black cooper or blue? I've been doing research on them and would love to add some to my flock. Ya'll have a great day!!

Ya'll have a GREAT day!!!
