Texas

Hi I am in New Braufels...we had about 15 chickens in our 13,000 square foot lot but we had to give them away because animal control said you cannot have chickens in the city on less than an acre lot.

Has anyone had success changing their city's zoning laws? I would really like to have some hens again:(

Jill...You may want to look into that. We live in Amarillo. The ordinance used to be none if under 1 acre, but recently they changed it to 1/4 acre minimum, but only 4 birds. Couldn't hurt to approach them with an idea like that.

Good Luck!

Hi Jill,
If you do a search on all the BYC forums, you will probably find some additional information about laws concerning poultry.

Some of the members have fought and won to keep their birds as pets, instead of livestock.

I would also do an internet search and see exactly what the New Braunfels ordinance says. Animal contral may not have the accurate information.

Amy,
Chickenstock is a way for BYC members and other chicken enthusiasts to meet each other, eat, and have some fun. There is usually some bird swapping/buying/selling also. Kids, friends, relatives-everyone is welcome.

Go to the BYC Chickenstock thread and you will see how a lot of the different regions celebrate Chickenstock.

Hope you can make it next year...

Thank you Carla I will look at those...

Here is what the code says,

"Household pets which are normally and customarily kept as household pets (including pigeons, but excluding chickens, pheasants, cows, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, and other fowl and livestock) will be allowed in any zoning district. No person shall keep, harbor or maintain more than 75 pigeons on a single lot, parcel or tract of land. All pigeons so kept shall be confined at all times in a clean, sanitary cage or loft located at least 50 feet from any residence on adjacent property. Pigeons bearing a seamless leg band issued by a recognized association of pigeon fanciers may be released for exercise or performance, upon the condition that the owner or person having possession of such pigeons shall not permit them to alight on any structure or property of others. Livestock or other fowl may be kept in any zoning district on a tract of land containing a minimum of 40,000 square feet. Up to 50 fowl or one head of livestock may be kept for each 40,000 square feet of land on the tract. No fractional measurements of land will be allowed in computing such required land area, nor shall such fowl or livestock be allowed to roam, graze, or be housed within 100 feet of any residence on adjacent property or within 500 feet of any food service establishment or food processing establishment, regardless of ownership or occupancy of such establishments."

Geez Can't believe I haven't done this yet in all the time I've been on this forum so far! SO here we go from King Brahma's Farm:

Ace Burvato

Castroville, Texas

Currently overrun with quail! I have more quail than any other bird at the moment with 250+ eggs in the incubator all developing nicely! I have too many breeds to really list. But my favorites I own are: Light Brahmas, True Araucana banties, EEs and turkens. I have Cream Brabanters on the way! Real excited about those!

Also raise ducks, geese, and goats. And of course....quail. Lots of....quail.
