Sad day at The Chunky Dunk - I got home yesterday and found my blue Maran (she won BV in Beaumont earlier this year) dead :(

No signs of injury and she didn't appear to be egg bound. I have fans in my coop and put ice bottles in their waterers. Is it possible a roo might have smothered her? (maybe in combination with the heat?) She had no odd smell to her. She appeared fine the day before and even a couple of hours before I found her.

Without doing a necropsy and possibly sending specimes to a lab, any cause of death is just speculation.

So sorry for your loss, heartbreaking and frustrating.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I lost 2 BSL's this past Saturday due to the heat. It sounds like you're doing all you can, though, with the fan and ice. Short of bringing them inside in the AC, I'm not sure what else you can do. Again, so sorry...

I know I'm guessing at COD, but although I've been debating about it, I just can't justify (in my particular situation) a necropsy :( I wish the situation were different, but I really was looking forward to seeing how she was going to do come show season in January. I do think I will add a couple of more fans this weekend and maybe switch out the straw in the next boxes for shavings - maybe that would be a little cooler - no idea really, just talking/typing out loud. Thank you.

Vickir - Are your girls in shade? Have you tried misters? I have 2. One in my extended run, and one in my regular (~rodent proof) run. I think it helps quite a bit. One of my silkies "digs in" in front of it during the hottest part of the day. My other 2 silkies hang out in the coop lately where there is another fan going (they might be getting broody - I'm not sure yet). Good luck with your girls!

I'm in Bastrop. Glad to be here! Still a little wet behind the ears when it comes to chickens, but I'm learning fast! So far, so good. Can't wait for that first egg!
