Thanksgiving Day Hatch, anyone?

When I went out to count my chickens tonight I saw two small fuzzy heads sticking out behind my broody. I was shocked. I didn't expect any of the eggs to hatch b/c when she started setting our new roo was still trying to work things out with the hens; he was young, inexperienced, a bit clumsy and the hens were fighting him off every time I saw him go after one. Apparently he was more successful than I thought. Anyhow, with a few reaching we came up with 7 chicks and several more eggs that were pipping/zipping. So I guess we have some Thanksgiving chicks! Who would have known.

I'll post pics tomorrow...if all goes well and I have time between the cooking!

Oh yeah...congrats everyone on their hatches and upcoming hatches.

Oh that is wonderful!! I just love surprises! And wow, 7?? And you thought he wasn't getting the job done! I guess he is just a bit shy, didn't want to do it in public!

He was hilarious...he'd mount them and fall off or they'd stand up and knock him off. Once I saw a hen crouch-walking across the yard with the rooster on her back hanging onto her neck feathers for dear life and still trying to do his business. Gotta give him a gold star for tenacity.

15 Silkie chicks plus one marans that hatched out most of the way and died. I don't know if I should take it out of the bator. I did take out the other chickies from the first batch just when the second batch started hatching. They were not playing well with the new guys. Some more are pipping. The marans are slower to hatch than the silkies. I think the one that died hatched too soon.
