Thanksgiving Day Hatch, anyone?

Well mine are to hatch on black Friday. They are Australorp or Production Reds crossed with a Welsummer roo. I REALLY need to plan better next time.

Aww, I am hoping mine hatch out on Thanksgiving. It will be cute. Been running too cold though so we shall see. Brother is going to take some home with him if they do hatch. He has built a coop already. One of those build the coop first types. Me on the other hand, I had 12 week olds still in the house at night while the inside of the coop was not quite finished. It makes it much more exciting.

I tried to talk my sisiter into taking some but she thinks just because she doesn't like eggs she shouldn't have chickens. What a poor excuse.

My daughter (9 years old) has been coming up with names for our Thanksgiving hatchlings: Turkey, Stuffing, Cranberry are some of the "top" names. My favorite however is Wishbone, LOL.

Just checked my calendar. I have two hatches going, both due to hatch Thanksgiving weekend.

I have 42 eggs in one bator that will hatch on Friday. 24 are RIRs that I'm hatching for a friend. The rest are Ameracaunas. Well, at least they are supposed to be. Might be EE's. I don't care as long as they lay colored eggs.

The second bator has 8 eggs due to hatch on Sunday after Thanksgiving. Those are 2 Ameracaunas, 1 cochin, and 5 of MY banty partridge cochins. I can't wait to see if mine hatch!! I just hatched 1 mutt egg and it so cool to hatch my own eggs!!!

When is everybody gonna candle?

I just candled today. Of the ones showing veining, everything looks good. I even had a few bouncing around. I think one of the momma hens must not have been laying fertile eggs because all the clear ones look like they're from the same hen.

This is my first batch and I am just so amazed by the whole process. I don't have kids and have never had pets who gave birth, so I've been pretty ignorant of this whole "miracle of life" thing.

It just blows my mind that I'm growing little living beings inside these eggs. My maternal instincts are definitely kicking in. I can't imagine what it feels like to be a real mommy.

My two doves just hatched eggs this weekend, so my house is like a birdy nursery.

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I will have Turkey Day Chicks. (as long as all goes well)

These are eggs from my flock all running together and not in different breed pens as I was just curious what kind of chicks I would get. I plan to keep all the pullets for their eggs in a seperate non-breeding coop from the purebreds. The roosters will end up in the freezer or at auction.

AWWW that is so cool. Could you imagine hatching out turkeys on Turkeyday? Maybe I need to make a plan for next year!

If all goes well I have 5 eggs incubating due around the 21st... well that's a week earlier than thanksgiving.. but I plan to adjust my work schedule so I won't be gone as long as usual.

Wow! I could have written that post!!! That's me... Ditto!

One reason I believed having my pets fixed was because I knew how hard it would be for me to find GOOD safe homes for them... so it would be the same for my chickens! I'm so attached to the three I have... and can only have one Roo... so I will be in big trouble later if this is a productive hatch... but I'm kind of figuring it out as I go along and not worrying about it right now.

Like you probably, I just feel the NEED to try this to satisfy my maternal instinct and that's what I keep having to point out to my mate. We chose not to have children of our own... and my pets ARE my kids... just easier! He's getting off easy and just has to put up with me and my beloved pets!!

And they sure are a whole lot cheaper!
