Well, I have been waiting to candle because everyone says not to candle too much.

I'm very impatient!!

lol.. i'm impatient too... my last hatch, i candled on day 4,5,6,8, 9,10, 13, 15,16,17,and 18.. lol...
and i got 6/6 that were viable after day 4...

but that's just me..
i've seen people say not to candle before day 10.. but... yeah... i couldn't wait.. lol.. and watching the growth from day to day is amazing...

i'm going to candle this batch tonight.. and then probly not as much as i did for the last one cause ... okay.. i probly will...

I started 15 in a still air incubator on 11-7 11-8 and 11-9. This is my first attempt at hatching eggs, my eight year old son was begging for the opportunity. I should have researched more before i started. I learned a LOT after the eggs were in the incubator already (not the best approach!). I think i may have messed up HUGE by starting eggs over a three day period. Does anyone have any experience doing this? I am at a loss of how to go in "lockdown?" with the time span of start. I am excited about this thread because you all are a couple days ahead of me in setting your eggs, so i can learn as i read along. THANKS!

BTW ALL advice is welcome. My eggs are a mix of White Leghorn, and possibly RRR, Barred Rock, New Hampshire, and Buff Orph fertilized by a Silver Lace Polish. Not sure how many of each, or which are which, as i gathered them from the coop. I DO know i have one Orph egg in the mix, and of course the Whites are obvious. I was inspired to hatch eggs by my Egyptian hen who is broody and setting on 5 eggs in the coop due the 21st - which is our first experience with a momma hen too.

oohh good luck.....

the staggered hatch, you would probly be oaky to go into lockdown on day 19 of the first eggs and spilt the difference...
i will be starting duck eggs tomorrow night along with the chicks i set on the 6th... that's a doozy of a staggered hatch...

i have a homemade incubator that i will set up to be my hathc incubator.. i'll put the chicken eggs into it on day 18 and keep on turning the duck eggs in the little giant... that's the way a lot of people do staggers.. they have a seperate hatcher...

i'm sure there will be better information than what i have, but i think with yours being as close as they are you should be fine.. like i said, if it were me i'd just split the difference and lockdown on day 19....

at our house it's the 6 yr old that wants to hatch everything...

Looks like I'm getting some eggs tomorrow to put in the bator (wasn't gonna LOL but a friend had some she didn't feel like incubating... I had to take them - really I HAD to.)

so, in addition to the broody hen, I'll have some going in, but not hatching thanksgiving, soon after, however.
