I had had 21 to get the chick brooder set up but for some reason I waited to the last minute to do it :th Now that I have it ready I can't find the light bulb that I had for my heat lamp. Chicks have to come out today because some started hatching Friday morning. I have a green light in the heat lamp for now and I can feel the heat coming from it. Is it OK the use a green light on chicks? I have always used a yellow light or red. The only place around me that has them is closed on Sundays.
Make sure that the bulb is not green because of a plastic coating on the bulb. That coating is toxic and will kill chicks.

The bulb has to be incandescent too. LED bulbs do not generate enough heat.

Check into getting a brooder plate like the one premier1 sells. They will pay for themselves over time due to lower energy costs. They are also more natural for the chicks

I took the green one out. I will check in to a brooder plate, thanks.

I was surprised to see this little one hatched from my eggs. I have no idea where the gray came from because I have white Leghorns, RIRs, and one easter egger. This little gray hatched from a brown egg. My rooster is a white leghorn mixed with a RIR. :idunno

Youre a week early for the Easter hatch, I just ordered my first ever brooder heat plate and paid extra for two day ship, will see if I like it. I’d been using 2 heat lamps on timer(one for daytime and red one for night) for over 6 years and was please with outcome.

I love the brooder plate!

You will not need a timer for it. You can switch the light off at night and give them some darkness. It is good for their growth and temperament too.

I’ve had super robust chicks ever since using a brooder plate.

Anyone tried the sweeter heater?

I hope my chicks will not go more robust :D than they are after using the heat plate. They might bounce up to the ceiling;) since all my chicks I’d been raising were pretty healthy, never lost single chick ever in brooding 6 yrs(boasting) lol, Knock on wood.

I still have eggs for the easter hatch. I got eggs from my neighbor that I had to sit early because it was the only time I could get them.

I added 6 of my own eggs with the 10 I got from her, 11 have hatched so far.
