I hope you had a great time!! where did you run?I just got back from a cruise, thank goodness bc I am ready for the chickens again!! (not the 12+ inches of snow waiting for us..)
In Belize though, there were chickens everywhere!! I remember this one momma hen with around 18 1 or 2 day old chicks, just wandering around! I couldn't get a photo though.![]()
They mainly had Game bantams, but I once saw a Mille fleur Cochin, so stinking cute!!
If I have to name a animal I slaughter I call them something that always reminds me of their destination. Our new born male goat is Stewie. Rosters get names like satay, curry, adobo. I re-use the names so not to memorialize them. the names are just to identify them as in "Is adobo ready to put in the freezer or does he need 2 weeks?" Interestingly, I dont name hens.We have processed some spare roosters. You definitely can't name them - once you know they are not sticking around, distance yourself from them mentally. I can't do the killing (DH does that), but I do everything after that. I look at it as they had a better life here for 6 months than the grocery store chickens get for their 8 weeks of life.
I know a few people that raise meat rabbits. I think I'd have a hard time distancing myself from a rabbit.
Okay I need some help and since it takes forever to get help on the emergency thread, i will ask here. On NYD I hatched an Araucana chick, it has fallen ill, very ill, not eating, wobbly at firat now just lays there face is pale. I took it and put her under a heat lamp in my mud room, now i have a CCL girl who was in the same area, but different pen doing the same thing, she hatched in September. I moved her in the mud room in a separate cage. Theey both have been getting rooster booster for a couple days ( except Araucana who hasnt ate drank for a few days) I bought some B12 with K and put it down there beaks. They have never been around adult birds and are not on dirt. How does a bird get Mareks, that is one thing that comes to mind or vitamin deficency. Please help. I had other chicks in the brooder room in the garage.
For Mareks, they would have to have contact with a wild bird or be kept in an area where a bird currently or has previously had Mareks. (transmitted through dander)
There's no way they have coccidiosis? Puffed up looking?

That's the exact name I gave the file where I saved the photo! Bunny buns.
Sally,
I have been butchering my chickens for 35 years. I still do not like it. I do know for them..I need to do it. I know I will give them a good death and appreciate them for what they are and what they mean to my family. I do not let anyone else kill them. The first few kills are hard..proficiency and confidence makes it so much better and that takes time to learn. All you need is a sharp knife, a rope, and a tree limb. This is the best video I have ever watched.
We're having campine thighs/legs for dinner tonight!
Quote: If they are puffed up, I would get some Corid. You mix it in their water, but at this stage, you will have to force them to drink it by dribbling it on their beak or dipping their beaks in it like when they were babies.
If it is coccidiosis, it can kill them within a couple days if left untreated.
Me too, but I can make some pretty good bread. Never learned how to make biscuits.

I hate medicating chickens..however in this instance (I figured you do not cull for disease or illness) I agree with corid in the water for everyone. I never recommend medicated feed. So someone else will have to tell you about that. I feed FF, sunshine, exercises, free range in a field of kale, Oregano, dill, spinach, rosemary, garlic, pumpkin, squash, cucumbers and hot red peppers. A few others too.

They were both dead when I got home. Can I get the corid from TSC? I don't need anyone else dead. I usually don't medicate, I am making batch of FF tonight. I really don't know what else What is weird is they were both in different pens, the mistake I made was to move the Araucana in with the CCL, thinking it was being bullied by the other chicks and not eating enough, that is when the CCL got sick, she only showed signs for 1 day, and was still eating early evening yesterday by night fall she looked bad and that is when I moved her. Are they too young for rooster booster?![]()
