G'Day to you all, Well Saturday March 30th was the day. The Licorice the little black cochin had 4 little pullets hatch. She had 4 eggs, two green shell and two brown shell. The two from green shells look nothing alike. One is completely yellow and the other has strips on her back. Yes, I am trying to get better at this feather sexing or at least understand more. I figure will have 16 eggs to practice with. I will post pics a little later. Now for the homemade incubator. Drum roll please. Yes, we didn't fry them when the incubator went up to 114!

I go my first pip on Friday the 29, from egg 11. My first hatch on Saturday the 30 from egg 13.

We were so happy. Boy, on Sunday two of them started zipping so fast I almost missed it, #12,an 6. When they popped out the little dears were so tired. Late Sunday #11 hatched, it had started on Friday, opened a extra large hole on Saturday and got very tired. It slowly pecked at the shell, by Sunday the membrane was getting dry and I could tell it was starting to stick to the chick. I took a damp paper towel and moistened the membrane and turned it over to help it dislodge. With that help it seemed to agonizingly push the shells apart and flop down. The bottom shell was stuck to its back by the membrane. Interesting to look at, head out, legs out and shell stuck to back. I helped it with damping a little and it came off. I think its neck was curled to long. It took a very long time to stretch out its neck. It is the largest of the chick and all dark black. This Morning April 1, #7 popped out quick. I will put them in the brooder in about 4 hours so the are all dry.
So the count for March- set 18 eggs, 4 with Cochin, 14 in incubator. ,2 red ring of death, incubator now has 12 eggs eggs, Cochin hatch 4, incubator hatch 4 by March 31
So far one hatch on April 1@ 5:45 am. Only 7 eggs left in the incubator and #8 is pecking away. Not to bad for our first incubator hatch. I can't wait to see the rest.

Does anyone know when we find out who the winner is for this contest?

We have a lot of contests that have ended and need judging. We are working as fast as we can.

Please help! I finally had one of my 4 chicken eggs hatch and his navel looked like this. The incubator got up to 102 when I was gone for Easter & he zipped half way, but then was stuck for several hours so I had to give him a little help( I did not remove him from the egg). The navel was very sticky and bloodless so I tied it with floss and cut it(it was getting caught on his feet). It looks like second picture now. Do you think he'll be ok? Also, what should I do with the other eggs? They don't show any sighs of life and I set around 9:30pm on the 9th.

Looks fine.

Last chick finally out.

Just in time to.

I had noticed at the start of this thread they had mentioned that the spot closet to the turner motor should be left vacant due to the motor generating heat. I also noticed you can lay eggs on top of the others until first candleing when spots will open up when you take out clears. Just a thought good luck with your hatch.

I'm so sorry for those of you not getting any to hatch. Don't give up! Hatching is a learning experience, and once you get it right, it is SO worth it.

Congrats to all of you with chicks.

If you feel strongly about someone that should get the Best Hatch Participant Prize (not including myself, Sally or mlmddh) then please send me a PM. I'd like to announce the winner of this prize this afternoon.

I will try to check in on this thread today, but mostly, I'm going to be trying to get these contests wrapped up and hopefully announce some winners.

Keep entering your final hatch numbers so we can get them recorded.

A HUGE Thank You to Sally and Mike for helping me with this hatch. I could not have done it without you.

started with 12 eggs, 11 went into lockdown
.

I had to help the last one out late saturday night. It was stuck and couldn't turned and had pipped really low. I thought it pipped at the wrong end but it wasn't.
I left it in the incubator over night and Easter morning it was dry and walking around. Put it in with the others and although it is smaller it's doing great. no curled toes, no spay leg nothing abnormal looking so excited about that! judging by all the pictures I've seen and trying to sex thiese guys early by the patch and color ect. looks like their may only be 3 females and 7 roos.
edited to add picture:

On another note, I put the quail into lockdown Sunday night around 7 and was cleaning things up when I heard chirping. I went over to listen closer and thought how cute I've never heard quail chirping in their eggs. Looked down with a flashlight to see if I could see a pip and saw the head of a baby sticking out he had already zipped and had the lid popped. So cute and tiny. He was running around this morning across all the eggs and had 2 new buddies. Hatching early only day 15 for the first one. They must be hatching early since I put them in the older incubator while the chickens were in lockdown? I used the same thermometer I had in the other incubator but it still must have had hot spots after installing a fan too. I have no idea these little guys need to undersatnd that they are supposed to wait until day 18 to hatch. Some one get them a calendar!!!!
These quail aren't in the hatchalong. They are not supposed to be hatching until Wed.

Also want to give a shout out and Thanks to Happy Chooks, Sally Sunshine, and everyone else who helped putting this together. Also to those who participated, It was fun hatching with others. Oh and I want to Esp Thank Ron for his updates, I always look forward to reading them.
