Oh- I wanna do this! How do I play? I will set my Orpington eggs! Are any more prize eggs needed? I have Jubilee, BBS, chocolate/mauve and lavender!

With a mix like that, I'm sure they'd create a contest for it.

Seriously, I think they are still in need of prize eggs. That's going to be one busy contest!

OK I'll probably regret this, but I'm in. What do I have to do this time around.

BTW, if I get another zero hatch, I'm hitting the feed store and lying. Just wanted to be an honest liar.

Who knows. Maybe one of my super broodies will feel the need to sit for me.

What kind of prizes are you looking for?
Love it!

I agree, that prize sounds great. Who wouldn't want those eggs!?

My dream is to have big ole huge barn. The old kind with stalls on both sides and a hay loft up top in the middle.
Great dream and goal!

Candled most of the 39 eggs in my bator last night and most of them I can tell are forming! Yay!!! I am so excited to be getting closer to having chicks again!!

Still would love to find someone who has SS hatching eggs.... Anyone?????
Great, love to see the hatches go well.

I wanted to share a picture of my broody blue ameraucana with her BLRW chick

Cute!

Here is a picture of my olive egger girl and her 4 babies. 2 black copper/ cuckoo cross and 2 HRIR !
More cuteness!

Well today I weighed the Easter hatch long emu egg. It lost 22 grams (a bit much). It is much more porous and the shell is more grainy feeling, so I kind of expected this : / but overall it's doing well : )
Can't wait to see the emu babies!

I'm behind!
A woman right down the street from me raise a number of quality purbred chickens. One of which is the Appenzeller Spitzhauben. I just couldn't resist so I bought hatching eggs.

I love mohawk chickens!
Hygrometer. Where can I get a GOOD one. Does anyone have one they'd recommend? I'd like to buy one before I set for this hatch...don't trust the one I have (Accurite thermometer/humidity from Walmart).

Every hydro I have ever seen was off. Just have to calibrate. Also acus will not go under 16 so if it says that you are unclear. Its easy to calibrate them however. Just leave them overnigjt in the saltwater method.

Sally, sorry for your loss. I love reading all of your wisdom. :hugs

I have a general question about vaccines for chicks. When you folks hatch, do you vaccinate for Mareks, and for any others as well? Also, in a typical back yard flock, is it worth it to invest in a mister vaccine administrator, like what the large hatcheries use, or just learn to do the needle method? I read to insert the needle in the neck skin, but some people say the thigh is better.
TSC had never heard of Mareks vaccine, but they sell lots of other vaccines. I noticed Jeffers pet supply will sell it.

If they are going to be pets.and not breeder stock there is no reason not to vaccinate. If you loose a treasured pet and you could have prevented it its heartbrealing. If you are breeding for immunoty its q different story. Depends on what losses you can tolerate.

I had 2 mixed banties brood together & a month later 3 silkies sat a nest of 27 large fowl eggs together. That was 2 summers ago. All other broodies have been singles.

Mu silkie brood in piles. The most I had was 6 on one set of eggs. I moved each out when I jad chciks for her so they didn't all try and mother the chick.
My oddest pair was a royal palm turkey and an Icelandic. Pumpkims looked like lucky was her chick not co brooder.

Count me in... Even though I've had horrible hatches lately...they are all doing great.. Right it up to lockdown... Everyone is moving when I candle as I'm going to lockdown. (One sometimes has internally pipped but not always) but then I get one out (once none!) (hatch befor this one got one. Baby out of 8 and then she died after about a week. These are my own eggs... Last year I had much much better rates. (Sigh) I have some welsh harlequin eggs coming... I'm hoping maybe the girl I'm hatching from is just not getting enough of something... (Trying adding yougurt/kefir and or scrambled eggs)

If you can get them necropsyed it sounds like they may be picking up bacteria or infection in the egg. Fumigate your bator but it could.be coming from the hens ovaducts. A necro might tell you how to treat your hens if that is the case.

@The Sheriff

@kathyinmo

Have both hatched emus.
Yes, though Kathy not so willingly.

(eggs were a surprise gift for those of you that didn't follow the story)

We'll take any prizes people want to donate - it just means more contests! PM me with what you would like to offer and we'll match it up with a contest!

Clean out your bator really well, you could have some bacteria in it. Also check your humidity levels and whether the eggs have enough oxygen. (open vent holes)

Any kind of prizes, we are getting a wide variety!

Today is day 21 for 32 ee eggs. Just left for work with 12 pips. Any guesses on how many chicks when I get home?
More than 12.
