Love this stuff, for lock down, and for the brooder for a couple of days. I get mine at the dollar store.
I need to make a run to the dollar store for some of these. I just used some in the bator a few days ago for a hatch and loved it.

yuppers, I wont buy white or cream colors anymore as they seemed to have little discolored stains from those first green poops, I need to get more, and after a while it gets flimsy with all that bleaching though, do you bleach before you wash them? I would assume so because they can get really pooped up! I seen some use them in the brooders, I may buy a bunch more and use it instead of paper towels for the first few days in the brooder.

BLEACH!! oh that reminds me!! @lizanne just made me aprons to save my shirts from bleach demise!!! I always have bleach stains along the lower part of my shirts! She made Harmony and I matching aprons out of feed bags!! I love them with big pockets for hauling stuff with us when we do the chickens!!

here is lil Luke sporting his sissys like a champ, why did I not get one made for the littlest girlyboy? ha ha ha

This apron is absolutely adorable. I wish I was so crafty Id be making a ton of these.

No, they never stick in the tomato baskets. No sticky chicks allowed here!

See the SG Dorkings standing on the shelf liner?
I tried out using the tomato and strawberry containers to separate my eggs by breed this past hatch a few days ago. Worked like a charm. I am so happy you had mentioned using these many time through out this hatch along because I was at a loss on what to do since a few of my breeds look so similar. Thank You!

A rainy spring day! at least it's not cold.
Beautiful barn!

I hope i don't see any more snow until next winter.
I am right there with you. Our snow is finally gone and I can now do yard work and repairs all the things winter wreck havoc on.

I am finally caught up.

I hope you all are doing well. We are getting so close to hatch day I cant believe how the time has flown by. I wish you all good luck with your eggs as they go into lockdown.

I plan to lockdown first thing tomorrow morn.

I add oxine to the water but maybe I should go pull out a couple of my old pennies to try instead. The temp and humidity of my digital cabinet is right on with my thermometer/hygrometer but maybe I'll try raising the temp slightly. It is mostly the Langshan chicks that are having problems. They are big chicks and in addition to having sticky ones, a number of them seem to pip, start to zip, and then get stuck. I'm wondering if they need specialized hatching conditions.
That does need to be checked.

Weigh them and go by percentage of weight lost for incubation. They may need a cool down cycle or misting to. It sounds like something is not letting them develop correctly and absorb the yolk. The cool down cycle and misting will help them absorb the yolk and hatch better.

THE EASTER HATCH ALONG EMU EGG IS GOING TO HATCH WAAAAAAAY EARLIER THEN SET FOR.
MOST LIKELY.....TODAY!!! THE CHICK IS CHEEPING AND GOING CRAZY IN THE SHELL.

LOOK FOR THE EMU HATCHING LIVE STREAM LINK TODAY.

Thank you Sally for the explanation of "draw down"! I was wondering about that too!

On the hatcher lining, my last hatch I just put a layer or two of paper towel over the wire bottom of my LG, leaving a little space around the edges for air flow. It seemed to work great and made for easy clean-up afterwards.

I took my 40 remaining eggs out of the turner a day early (this is Day 17 for me) and laid them down in my LG. I will hand turn them till tomorrow afternoon. I did this because my sister wanted me to add a few of her duck eggs to test fertility and it was easier with them all lying down. Plus, I gave 6 of the HAL eggs to my Broody BA hen, Winona out in the coop. I will move her to a safe broody pen in the coop tonight. I plan to give her more of the chicks to care for once they hatch.

SOOO EXCITED!!!!

Broody mama on lockdown!
No, seriously, this is my solution for 1)keeping the other hens out of her area, and 2) keeping the babies from falling out until I can get them moved.

The top of the chicken wire is stapled, and the bottom is hooked to nails positioned to hold it down. But, I can lift it off the nails to let her out in the mornings. I did all this with her in the nest, and she never even flinched with all that hammering. Broody zen is awesome!

Hatch day is Thursday! :weee

And I also have 10 chicks coming Thursday, so I'll give them to her too.
