I used a box and put it where she was at and then after she set a day moved her and the box together, to a new shed, she didnt budge LOLLast year, I had two broodies sitting together, and one of them pecked and broke several eggs. Only three chicks hatched and only one mom was any good.
Right now, I have two hens that are broodie. I tried taking the more aggressive one and isolated her so I could put eggs under her. She escaped from what I thought was a very nice cozy nesting area. I don't want to leave her in the regular nesting boxes because the other hens go in and lay eggs in there. It is a chore to sort out the old eggs (marked X) and the new ones. The boxes are two feet off the ground, also, so baby birds could fall out and mom would not be able to get them back in. Has anyone suggestions for how to rehome a broodie hen, and still keep her in the mood for setting?

Let her sit where she chooses, then once the chicks hatch, move her and the babies at night to a safe location. Here is one of my Icelandics when she was broody. She was too good for a nest. Notice she is at the roof line of the coop, which is about 8 feet off the ground. I cannot keep an open bag of shavings in the coop, or she is in it.Last year, I had two broodies sitting together, and one of them pecked and broke several eggs. Oh how the time is going by so slow for me to start this incubation! I want to put eggs in the bator NOW and I can't!! Winter just keeps dragging on, Norovirus is running rampant in my house (youngest son had it first...took 12 days for him to be normal again...then it hit my mom, then my eldest son, and then my husband. Mom, eldest son, and hubby still sick). The puppies are driving me NUTSand I still have 2 weeks before they can go to their new homes.![]()
To make matters worse, the local TSC got SLW chicks in and I couldn't buy any...because my brooder needs to stay empty until this hatch-a-long's babies are born. And I can't find ANYONE who has SLW eggs for me to buy local or to trade for my mixed flock fertile eggs to put in the batch to be hatched.
Calgon, take me away!!!!!
Dick Horstman has SLW Hatching Eggs.....Google Horstman's Poultry. He's very reasonable & from what they say very reputable.
