Can a cheap sytrofoam bator be used successfully as a hatcher? Any other suggestions for cheap hatchers? Anything specific that is more inportant in a hatcher rather then the incubator? I know I need good airflow and don't need to worry about turners; anything else? I've finally feel comfortable with my beginning incubation skills and I'm wanting to be able to do staggered hatches but cant justify the expense of purchasing another Brinsea 20. Thanx!

Mines not there yet but this duck thing is a good start! He seems pretty interested in expanding the pea pen too. He keeps asking when I think they will start laying eggs!
I lost my prize show splash roo and I contacted a friend that was going to the newnan show and asked him if he would find me one there. Of course he said he would and I told him I would pay as much as $40. When I told DH about it he said that I can't find a really good one at that price to tell him up to $100. Luckily he found one for $35. We go pick them up this weekend. I also am getting a black roo for my paint pen. The last one I got grew out gold leakage on his hackles so I sold him. I dont' need to put gold in my paint pen.

Styros work great for hatchers! For cleaning I've found the best and easiest way is to pop the bottom and all the inside pieces into the tub, soak, and scrub with a soft bristle 'nail brush' that is only used for cleaning bators. Sterilize and let air dry fully. Hope this helps! :)

Agreed. The spot check is accurate to .1 degree.

Now that's love, giving up the garage. My DH would never do that. I'm lucky I get to park my car in it.

This garage will fit 4 cars in it easy. I have the back half that will fit 2 cars and there are 6 pens in it. All of my moveable pens and one is attached to the back with a pen that goes into the back. We have no room for parking cars since there are 4 wheelers and motorcycles in the front half.

Yep, they work fine for hatchers. My hovabator cleans up easily with bleach and water. The hardest part to clean is the hardware cloth. But if you put down the rubbery shelf liner, it keeps it pretty clean.

I use washcloths to line the egg tray. They collect all the tiny bits of egg shell and other waste, and give the babies something soft to dry off on. When the hatch is done I can just pop them in the washer with a little bleach and then disinfect the incubator as usual.
