Important!

Now that the Guess How Many Eggs Will Be Set Contest is closed, we can start getting the actual number of eggs set.

When you are finished setting all of your eggs, please post in this thread how many total eggs you set within the +/- 2 days of the set dates for each type of fowl. If you did not set any eggs, please post that as well.

Recording these numbers is a HUGE job! Thanks @mlmddh . Lets make it easy on him!

A total of 13/23 hatched. still hoping for the last 10.

Turning eggs was not much of a thing before the 1950s. There was a British poultry study back then that showed a "better" hatch rate if the eggs were turned during incubation. It has now come to be considered a death sentence if eggs are not turned.

Most of the damage from not turning--lethal that is--happens on days 5 to 7 and is caused by un even vein development. Some of the embryos will die because of blood supply being cut off. General problems will be lack of vigor at hatch and wet chicks.

Most of the chicks that make it past the first 7 days will hatch fine without turning. Important: I am not saying to not turn you eggs just saying it is not going to doom your whole hatch if you have a turner failure. Do make sure that the eggs are turning though.

Of course DH is going to flip cause I'm already running my incubator plus a borrowed one, both full of my Christmas pre-order. Now off to catch up on the last 300+ posts...

Ok!! I have an external pip, but it's down near the pointy end of the egg. Is this a malpositioned chick? Is it too soon to tell?

This is only my second hatch, and the last time I did them upright in cartons.

@campingshaws

Watch to see where the chick starts to zip. If it is towards the middle, it will likely hatch by itself. Also, make sure goo is not coming out of the pip. If so, you will need to clear it so that the chick can breath.

The chick is up side down so it did not turn up towards the air cell. It may already be stuck by goo.

Advice: get a better thermometer. The one you have can be off by up to 10 degrees. That will cause the yolk to not absorb correctly and the chicks will get pasted into the shells. The Brinsea spot check is perfect for incubation and will be off by .1 dgerees. It also has a fast rise and fall reading so you know what the temps really are using them.

Yahoo... I will for sure have 12 Ameraucana Eggs. Found someone local, I'm hoping to pickup a few barnyard mixes and a few Silkie and Sizzles. Hoping to set at least 24. Last year I had good hatch, for the Easter Hatch, but it was my 3rd hatch. So the incubator has been regulating for 24 hours, and now I'm the nervous momma hoping I don't screw up. HeHe. So excited. Can't wait for fuzzy butts....

Thanks! I flaked off a bit of loose shell and was able to peek in past the membrane. No goo so far.

Thats not my main thermometer, I just use it for the humidity reading. But I am looking for a new thermometer. I'll have to look at the brinsea. Thanks for that too. :)

If there is anyone in the southern New Hampshire area that wants to join the hatch a long but doesn't have eggs lined up yet, I should have 2-3 dozen mixed breed eggs that are available for pick up only. All hens are an assortment of breeds laying an assortment of egg colors, males covering them are Cream Legbar and Black Copper Marans. Female chicks that hatch could lay a variety of egg colors ranging from blue, green, olive, and browns ranging from light brown-chocolate brown. I guess we could call it a rainbow assortment. I am also NH NPIP.

PM me if there is interest.
