Thank you. I've spent some time reading her post now. I'll reread it a few times as a brand new cooler is much easier to find than a used or broken wine chiller.

Yes, that is a great view for hatching. If the price was closer to $100 maybe I'd get a pair. But for now all chicken money after the feed bill is paid is going towards either a hatcher or a plucker. Last summer the chicken money after the feed bills went towards new breeding pens.

I won the second one or I'd just have the one.

That is interesting to hear. How many hatches did you try that with?

I used to hatch in my bedroom where the incubators got plenty of sunlight and hatches I had were great, then when I moved my incubators downstairs to the basement the hatches were less great. Same room temps as upstairs and no fluctuations, I was curious is sunlight or lack of played any part or if it was just coincidence...
I'm curious as well. I have mine set up in the darkest part of my kitchen but it still has plenty of ambient light.
I actually did 4 hatches to see if someone was just pulling my leg. 2 in the dark and 2 with plenty of sun. All were done in the same room which has the most stable temps. All eggs were from my 4 cot hens. The batches that were exposed to light did about 20% better with fewer quitters. I don't add water until lock down since the humidity is so high in that room.

I'm joining in the Hatch-a-Long!

I will be getting some silkie eggs and maybe some bantam cochin from a friend to put under my broody silkies. If they aren't broody she is letting use her Brinsea!

ETA: this will be my first hatch! So Excited!

I am so SUPER excited!

I've been lurking around and learning from everyone here for a few months. My little flock consists of 2 Araucana/Silkie hens, 2 sweet as can be banties, and a quad of Salmon Faverolles (though through this site, I've learned only 1 or 2 are breeding quality...so searching for another 2 hens that are SQ or BQ :)

So the eggs I'm picking up are Import English Orpingtons (black and black cuckoo), just happened to luck out finding a local that has super nice ones. Tomorrow is my day off and I am determined to tackle the snowpocalypse we're having to get them and hang with a new friend who is sharing and hatching them with me.

I have so much to learn from all of you...and I know I'm gonna be biting my nails this whole time!

Best cheap humidity pads or wicks for the sportsman?
Or other cheap ways to raise the humidity. I have the water bucket that fills the sportsman pan but those pads are pricy imo.
