So I was wondering, is this the start of a drake feather or just the way they start growing?
The duckling is only 2 1/2 weeks old

Oh and I forgot my other duckling does not have this feather growing

No that is just a little duckling down stuck on the end of the new adult feather coming in. Not saying it is not a drake but it is to early to tell by the tail feather.

I am so excited. I was running low on room for the chicks I already have. I'm raising 14 for a family that lives on a farm and doesn't have the best of luck getting them old enough to lay because something always gets them as chicks. So since I raised some for others last year, she asked. Who can say no to having cute chicks around? We also have 6 show chickens for my sons 4-H for fair, etc. And then add the 22, well now 18 in the incubator and yes, I was running short with just a 2x2x3 stock tank. I mentioned something to my friend and her husband shows up with this awesome idea! He made me two brooders out of doors from their house that they are remodeling. I have sooo much room now (which might be a bad thing since my boss wants me to bring some home from the store since they aren't selling very well). So I have a new home for my chicks after they hatch!! Here's hoping for lots of little chicks!

For coop or free range? I love my Iowa Blues, and the girls (all pullets still) have been laying up a storm since December! And my EE are very nice too, love finding the green eggs! I have a couple hand-me-down Buff Orphingtons who are super sweet and good layers. And some hand-me-down Black Australorps who are laying huge eggs (to me!) and are very striking in appearance, especially in the sun when the green and purple sheen to their feathers comes out.

And I love my Norwegian Jaerhons, but they like a lot of space. Cool little birds tho'! Lay very well for their size. And are very pretty! They're my flyball team's team colors! Ha!
thanks heaps

Quote: Notice I said HAD. I lost a few, then gave the rest away. They were sweet like a puppy dog, but dumb as a box of rocks.

Very cool brooder! Great score for you!

Look what I found yesterday!!!

Excuse the dirty pen, they are just in my temp. lambing yard, and happened (of course) to be in dirty part for the pictures.
So sweet!

Beautiful birds.

Spitz are great!!! The only down side to mine is they like to be free, they jump the chicken yard fence and free range on their own and mine like to sleep in trees. I have to climb up and get them down each night so they can get locked up. But besides that they are my absolute favorite breed of chicken, they have so many pros in my book that the tree roosting doesn't bother me.

Here are my girls

I love unusual birds.

Well bad day for me. I'm down to 16 eggs from 49, and only 1 out of my 9 turkey eggs is among them. It has a severely saddled air cell, so I'm not holding out hope. But the worst is that my dog got out this morning- we still have no idea how, because what dog jumps a fence for the first time at age 11? At some point during the day he killed our favorite hen. She's the only one who gets out of the run to go forage. Today was her last day foraging and laying us a beautiful dark brown egg. Skittles will be missed. :(

Wow, rough day

it's tough to lose any of them, but a favorite is even worse! Are any of the eggs in the bator your own chickens eggs? Could they be skittles's eggs? Hopefully you'll get a good hatch from here. Maybe some fluffy chicks will help bring cheer.
