Someone asked about hatch rate. I believe It is a calculation of the total eggs hatched divided by the total eggs set.
The best hatch rate in this contest will be just that (that is why we have to disclose how many we sett followed by how many hatched).
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
You are correct for this HAL purposes

Well, today is day 19 for us. Went into lock-down yesterday. No signs of chicks hatching yet. Can you see movement if your eggs are hatching in egg cartons? When do they start to cheep? I am really scared that our lose wire temperature spike did them in

Wish me luck!

I went to our local TSC and they had Blue Andalusian chicks for $1.99 ea. and I soooo wanted to get some, but the hubby gave me "the look" so I guess I'll just have to wait and see how ours hatch. Foo!

You can see them wiggle in egg cartons, but you have to stare really hard! It's difficult to see.

@Happy Chooks true, but isn't that a published article, and not just a forum thread? Since it's been brought to attention, maybe it should be reviewed? I assumed that published articles went through some sort of quality control (unlike the forum, which I assume are more personal opinions)
I'll bring it up to the rest of the Staff.

I have an egg that is on day 18 today-well, yesterday, since it's after midnight, that has the air cell at the small end of the egg. No wonder I couldn't see it last time! What should I do about that, anything?
Lay it on it's side for hatch. I'm assuming it is not pipped yet.

Pip or soccer damage? I am not sure.

Looks like a pip.

There are some albino trees in the Redwood forests of California. They actually survive off of a type of parasitism by fusing their roots with the normal trees

Yes, I've seen them and they are very cool. They are basically a sucker off of "normal" redwood trees.

Can someone tell me how to officially calculate hatch rate? If you candle and remove them if they are clear or have stopped developing for whatever reason, do you still count those?
Some people calculate it by # of eggs hatched divided by # of eggs set. Others calculate it on # of hatched divided by how many eggs developed. (fertility)

We don't have the best/worst hatch rate contests this year.

First, there is no hatch rate contest listed for this hatchalong so don't know if official is warranted here.
Different people calculate hatch rate based on what they want to know.
Divide the number of chicks hatched by the number you set to get your most basic hatch rate.
You can divide the number of developed eggs that go into lockdown by the number of chicks that hatch to see a more defined hatch rate.
If you are doing a fertility check on a pen/flock. Divide the total number of eggs set by the number of clear (non-developing) eggs to tell you what percentage are fertile..and then the number of fertile eggs by the number that make to "lockdown" or hatch to get the hatch rate for the pen/flock.

Hope that is not TMI!

For the purpose of the HAL, they are only taking the #set & #hatched, but as far as I know I haven't seen anything for a best hatch rate either.
I think a proper hatch rate over all is number of fertile eggs/number of hatch. I don't think that it shows a true rate is you calculate in clears. I usually give two rates if asked, the rate of the fertilized (counting all eggs that showed development wether they quite or not) /hatched and the rate of how many went into lockdown/hatched because to me, that's the real thing, how many make it to lockdown and still hatch.

And Speaking of which: dear MODERATORS, my final hatch count is 33!!!! My last little egg, that didn't even pip until all the others had been long hatched actually hatched from his shell early this morning. the ONLY chicken that actually hatched on day 21...lol talk about punctual.....lol

Went to bed at 4:00 AM. Its 7:00 AM central now and I have 5 more hatched. Sill have 11 hours left before hatch day for some eggs and 17 hrs for some.
Total score 15 so far!

Getting harder and harder to tell these chicks apart! (Except One)

Anyone wants to play guess the breed game?
Oh boy they are blending huh!?

You should have separated the eggs into strawberry containers so you could keep them separate until you were able to band them. That is what I am doing this hatch since I have 2 bloodlines to keep separate.

Good luck separating them and congrats they are supper cute!

I woke up to two more pips this morn, so I have a total of 3 pips, the first pip is going on 24hrs here shortly.

One of the confusing thing is he mixes his foam incubator instructions in with ones for the other kind, whatever that is, would have been a lot easier to follow if they were kept separate. You have to be careful to figure out which style he's referring to!
