The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Good to hear that you are feeling better. :)

This little one of yours reminds me of that youtube video..where the boy is running away screaming from all of these chickens chasing him..he has a bag full of bread!

Poor kid..at least your little one is only..a little nervous!

LOL thats funny. When we first got chickens she was like that. I made her go to the coop with me and watch while i fed and watered and even held one. It took a while but she's a lot better. She used o stand very still and tremble when they came near her.

Evening all. Have been indulging in a little geeking out the last hour or so, coming up with a plan for my quail project. I've got silver eggs (average eggs), A&M (jumbo eggs), and Jumbo/Pharoah (jumbo eggs) incubating. I love pretty much anything with a silver or lavender type gene, so I eventually want my quail to be all silver. That being said, I would prefer they are nice and big to be useful as well, so I've mapped meself out a plan to get there...

<geek alert....loves me some excel spreadsheets>

I'm cobbling together some breeding plans into a sort of clan based spiral breeding program as follows:

I'm using the rule that each group is a clan (pen) and all chicks produced out of that pen are tagged as that clan, like this:

Of course, if I'm going to geek on this, I MUST assign clan names to the pens...and coat of arms are naturally important...
(hopefully this is visible - if not, enjoy the pretty colors, and pretend it's supercool.

Anyway, I plan to cross the silvers out to jumbos, then recapture the silver, running 3 pens that spiral to keep up diversity and avoid crossing too close, blending back in jumbos when needed for size/outcross vigor.

Frigid here too in Ohio. Good luck with your re-arranging.
I am setting up a new breeding pen for my second flock of Swedish Flower Hens n Sunday when the weather is suppose to be a bit warmer.
Putting my Snowleopard Rooster in with my German import girls.

Hoping for some beautiful babies!!!!

Don't see how you can miss with those beautiful birds.

You can see them clearly if u click on them to make em bigger. Looks good. . . i guess. . . .I'm like Sgt Schultz. . . "I know nothing" about genetics and crossing and all that stuff. But hey, it looks great on paper.

Anyone else having some freezing frigid cold temps this weekend. Starting tonight and into Sunday we are expecting with windchill, -30 to -40 temps. Not the best night to do it but tonight it is time to finally do a little rearranging and get my tree roosting pullets into a new coop. They will finally join their Cockerel. And his brother will finally be moved to a new in a coop of his own with some females.

you sound like me. I drive by a junk pile and all I see is treasures to build things with. Most people will let you just haul the stuff off. Or craigslist is a great resource for treasures. It is nice to see the peacocks in a place they can roam little.
My turkeys have free ranges in the day time but you have to keep a eye on them they love the top of cars, anybodies car....The neighbors 1 mile down the rode used to have peacocks they visited me quiet often. They were so beautiful. Some shot them for being pest. I was so mad.....
Oh yeah!!

I love the treasures too!! Hubby needed to order a switch for the auger...the business has a huge pile of wood and crates 'n stuff. They said we could take what we want...I'm draggin' the guys back to load stuff in the cattle trailer. Yay!!
We are helping the environment AND recycling. That's ma story an' I'm stickin' to it.

I was in your neck of the woods on Wednesday...lol.

I have noticed some people have multiple sets of eggs going that were set at different intervals
How can you do this when at day 18 you have to lock down?

I have my own eggs and I have eggs hatching at different intervals in the same incubator. This so my eggs get set before they're too old.
I increase humidity and stop turning the eggs that are due...but I still open it to turn the rest of the eggs that aren't due. My humidity jumps back up fast, so I don't worry about it.

It's definitely not for everyone. It just happens to work for me.

I won't be stagger hatching the next allotment of eggs. They will be a dedicated hatch with actual lockdown because they're not my eggs.
