The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

... and of course I want some large fowl cochins...
And something that lays a white egg like a Buttercup just to make a nice rainbow assortment of eggs...

Darn... I am pretty sure this enabling is why I took a hiatus from byc to begin with!

Holy cow! It took me 30 min to catch up just from not being on since lunch.

When is a good day to candle duck eggs and actually be able to see something? Got 16 khaki Campbell eggs on day 4

Any time works, but day 7 should let you know which ones are developing and which ones aren't.

Now for something else, totally random, for grins and giggles.

How about a couple drawings I did on a 3-subject challenge?

This was a 5 drawing set - free choice of subject, but all 5 in the series were to have the same 3 objects in them (more or less) and each drawing was to stretch for a different feel from the others. Not sure what I did with the last two drawings, right now, but here are the first three of them.

(Moon, Apple/Tree, and Chicken were the 3 things I chose to include in the series. These are the first 3. The 4th one was a chicken jitterbugging with a tree with the moon as a disco ball overhead, blackout background. The last one was an older chicken, head shot from front, beak holding a sprouting apple seed, with the moon behind, surrounding the head. I wanted the chicken to grow up as I moved through the drawings, with the apple tree going backwards through its life - barren tree, fruit bearing, flowering, sapling, seed).

Amazing drawing!

My wishlist is
Lavender Araucana - If i get less than 2 hens out of current hatch.
Rhode Island Red
Buff Orpingtons
Dorkings
Cornish
If I don't have any of those avaible i'll set the current gen of my sizzle projects

Nice list!

What color of Dorking is your favorite?

will be attempting copper marans and a few barred rock

I love Marans, and my favorite rooster is a Barred Rock. I don't think you can go wrong with a Barred Rock.

I may have an active Blue Copper Marans by the time the set date comes along myself! I am so excited to see if he is ready, and the girls are laying.

Good luck! I hope you get some awesome chicks!

7 days for my runner eggs and we had movement on one and veins on another. I will report on day 14 which is saturday

We'll be waiting for the updates.

Oooohhhkay.

GOOD Morning!

I am in. My newly formed plan (and likely unobtainable plan, at that!) Is to hatch EVERYTHING I want to keep for the year. This will be an extreme challenge to my planning skills and somewhat of an engineering feat... but I am going for it. Worst case scenario - I will be sitting in the corner in my incubator/hatching room, hiding under a chair, as chicks fly about causing chaos when I have no room for them all.
I will also need to gently persuade my turkeys, peahens, pheasants and quail to all start laying just a tad earlier... any suggestions

Go big or go home, right?

Overnight the temperature dropped to 31F. When I just looked in on my chicks in the unheated greenhouse, there were several who had their heads sticking out from under the brooder plates. Unfortunately, one failed to thrive overnight, and as usual, was being sat on by several live chicks. I've moved the plates away from the water and food so there is much more room for them to roam around now. Last night was much warmer than usual, so still

for the colder nights in the next 7 days or so. Thanks to all those who kept my kids in their minds overnight.

And I just have to say, it was really disappointing to see 311 posts overnight. I like the jokes and pics and such, its a shame to have to just skip so many posts.

I'm sorry about the chick you lost, that's always hard, but I'm glad the rest are doing well.

1 pip out of 6 eggs I really need to make sure this bator is all set for the Easter hatch. I have never had this much trouble, lost 1 baby to the membrane drying out and killed one baby another was born so wet it took her 2 days to cool off....... I will never again use the small bator I will stick to my old trusty foam one. New technology my butt..... Praying at least the one little pip makes it out and hopefully we will get at least 1 more out of this..... Feeling bummed out right now

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope it hatches out nice and healthy.

I'm in. I'm testing my MacGyver Bator with fertile eggs starting next week. If it works well I'll be using it for the Easter hatch too. If not, I'll either tweek it or borrow my friend's incubator.

Hi, everyone!
Welcome! So glad you could join!

What breed are you setting?

I changed bators about day 18 because the little one kept messing up not even sure what the brand was but right now it is sitting in the dumpster outside LOL I have one that I love it is just bigger and I figured with a smaller hatch I would use the small one, NEVER gonna make that mistake again stick with what works.

My 1 little pip is starting to unzip and thank god I have 2 x2day old babies for her to chill with. I think she is gonna be fine.

Pictures?

I had my thermometers arrive today, because my others broke just as I was setting up for this hatch. I now know why my first hatch in my new bator is not doing so well. I set 50ish eggs. Culled to 35 on day 7 and now down to 24. The temp is 2.5 c higher in bator than setting. Have now applied cal factor for that and set to 38.0c which is giving me 100f at the center of the eggs all round. All good for lockdown tommorrow. Will see how many hatch. Should be good for the Hal by now. Just stuck in a preorder for 6 lav ara 6 black orps and 12 RIR to set. Need to see if I can track down the other 2 breeds now.

Best of luck with the hatch!

Good morning all it is 30 degrees in the desert. Hmmmm, thought it was supposed to be warm here. On my way out to break ice off the waters. Had to turn off the automatic ones, had one break and dump 350 gallons of water in the back paddock. No one got wet as the ground soaked it all up. Yeah for sandy soil. Up to getting 2 to almost 3 dz eggs a day. Got my GQF with 5 dz eggs in it and 3 48 egg bators going. 'Stops to take a breath' Anyway lots going on here. Oh yeah, mid-way through building the last three paddocks lots to do still.
this is the open run area each one gets to play outside in

30 F is warm here.

I hope everything turns out well with your hatch. Those are some nice looking chickens!

Hahaha! I have silver penciled or birchen bantam cochin on my list for adding NEXT year. I had Silver penciled I ordered from cackle two years ago, but gave up and sold them because they just were such horrible body type. Silver Ameruacanas have been on my list for two years now when my order from John B fell through so it is a tentative for every year...
I am glad you said that, I wasn't quite sure what face guys meant

Yup, my husband was very grumpy about my chickens math... that is until the end of last breeding season my peahens were bringing quite a nice supplement to our income (or I should say at least covering my poultry spending) and now he is totally on board. As long as he doesn't have to be involved with any chores.
Mine too, expect when it is very cold he will grumble and go out to carry the 5 gallon water buckets filled with hot water from the bathtub. I have BCM, Lavender split to black, white marans, Fly tie gentic hackle, Welbars, Isbars, Cream Crested Legs bars, and Cochins gold/silver laced. what do you have. I built a website to show mine off I am the crazy chicken lady who has what I call my fluffy butts photos album. Too funny

I should have known I would only be enabled here!!

I used to have a bunch of different varieties of quail... but it got a little crazy. I had to reign myself in, and at least I know 100% the sexes of the pharoh, so I stuck with them!

My husband said NO to ducks... but he also said NO to emu and I am seriously considering getting them anyway. I just have to build a pen in hiding...
"What? Honey, I had no idea we had a couple of emu roaming our yard in a brand new pen... however in the world did they get there??!"

Yeah, this is not the thread for discouraging people to get more animals...I've got an appointment to pick up a Holland lop eared bunny tomorrow (My excuses are two: 1. My soil sucks and I need fertilizer. 2. I sold my quail, since they're too cute and I couldn't use them for meat and hate the egg taste, so I have the perfect pen for a rabbit)

... and of course I want some large fowl cochins...

Darn... I am pretty sure this enabling is why I took a hiatus from byc to begin with!

What about some peacocks, red golden pheasants, Chinese ringneck pheasant, and some chukar? Maybe some rheas? Just remember... SET ALL OF THE EGGS

I know what you mean! I have a facepage and a webpage :p
I have India blue peafowl, lady amherst and yellow gold pheasant, pharaoh coturnix quail, Bourbon red turkeys, large fowl Welsummers and large fowl salmon Faverolles. I am envious of your welbars... one woman near me bred some welbars from scratch, and they are drool worthy

When I got rid of the multiple varieties of quail I gave my 4 Bay quail pens to my neighbor for his rabbits. I regret it now :p Rabbits are also on the "you-are-not-allowed-for-goodness-sake" list my husband has.

Well, if we are really dreaming, let's add silver pheasants, and rhea next to my new magically appeared emus pen :p
I am really tempted to add white, purple and Spaulding peafowl to the farm... but that will be on my 2018 add list!!

Don't forget the Guinea Fowl. :)

I draw the line at guinea. I was "gifted" one last year and the darned thing never shut it's beak! Too much noise!
