The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I can't see any on that list that you should take off, maybe add pigeons and ducks though

. And add some other coturnix quail colors besides Pharaoh, like maybe silver or scarlet.

I should have known I would only be enabled here!!

I used to have a bunch of different varieties of quail... but it got a little crazy. I had to reign myself in, and at least I know 100% the sexes of the pharoh, so I stuck with them!

My husband said NO to ducks... but he also said NO to emu and I am seriously considering getting them anyway. I just have to build a pen in hiding...
"What? Honey, I had no idea we had a couple of emu roaming our yard in a brand new pen... however in the world did they get there??!"

Talk me out of it!
Why?!?! Looks like a perfect plan to me!!

Quote: Doing great! Where have you been? I'm not on BYC as much nowadays but you can find me at "The Old Folks Home" and on the "Icelandic Thread", though it has slowed to a trickle since new posters are lured away by the face guys. I'm always here at the Easter Hatchalong....wouldn't be spring without it!!

I took a hiatus... When we moved, I decided to cut down my flock to "just egg layers"...

It didn't last. I can honestly blame hubby though, he saw a pair of peafowl and said lets get them... And boom. Magically I now have 8 peafowl and a menagerie of other species.

Good Morning Peeps!

Yesterday, @Sally Sunshine , asked what our plans for the day were and I had to work
hmm.png
Today I am OFF! Okay, I'm "off" everyday but today I don't have to go to work!!

Since we will have daytime temps above freezing for the next few days, I will be doing some coop chores today (and some inside housework but I'm not happy to be doing that)! My DH says he never imaged someone could be happy about cleaning dirty "chicken dishes" and chicken poop, but I am!

Love my flock!!
I will be:
  1. removing the heated dog dish waterers and giving them a few days of rest and put the plain waterers out.
  2. "stirring" the litter and adding some fresh shavings and shredded leaves.
  3. checking the nest boxes to see what needs refreshing with new hay
  4. hand feeding some meal worms and canned corn for some personal time with my girls and guys

I hope everyone has a great day!
Sounds like you are going to have a busy day!

OK y'all force me to do this, I know you had fun and I had been there done it too at one time, we all know how I love to have fun too, HOWEVER........

Good morning all it is 30 degrees in the desert. Hmmmm, thought it was supposed to be warm here. On my way out to break ice off the waters. Had to turn off the automatic ones, had one break and dump 350 gallons of water in the back paddock. No one got wet as the ground soaked it all up. Yeah for sandy soil. Up to getting 2 to almost 3 dz eggs a day. Got my GQF with 5 dz eggs in it and 3 48 egg bators going. 'Stops to take a breath' Anyway lots going on here. Oh yeah, mid-way through building the last three paddocks lots to do still.
this is the open run area each one gets to play outside in

Nope... It looks great.... :gig
I aint a quail person so I can't offer suggestions on that but for chickens, if you don't mind ornamentals I'd suggest adding a sultan or an OEGB hen. Or two. Or maybe 3 would offer companionship..?

That's how I started... I said, " I will not make pets out of them, only egg layers."
Well, it went from that to: "those banties are really so cute, and wouldnt eat much... The silkie will earn its keep by being a broody hen... I really need a good roo, why not get a sultan, as they are kinda cute.."
