Ok, "technically" it just turned twelve...but I feel just like the gif!!!

My pullet, the white one with the black spots...IS LAYING!!!

I saw her lay the egg and it's now marked!

Actually I think she's been laying for a while. It's HER that's been giving me pinkish eggs. I believe I have some in the bator. I hope

that I get white chicks. Or just something different from the brown chipmunk chicks. I'm thinking my "one"...just one black pullet is laying too!

I also see my own hatched pullets from last year checking out the nests.

I have an off the cuff question. I've seen 2 of my black Silkie roosters making nests, setting in their nests and making "hen" noises. I also see some of the Silkie pullets actually laying in the nests...

I've read that Silkies CAN help out with the brood. BUT this morning while I was waiting and watching the hens fight for the nests (nest boxes) to lay their eggs...I see I've got EE roosters doing the same thing as the Silkie roosters at the other end of the coop. They sound extremely upset, just like a hen only louder, when the other rooster wants the "nest." The next rooster gets in, sets like a hen and works at perfecting the nest. They build beautiful nests...but??? Is this normal??

Congrats on the eggs!!

Yeah, don't worry, roosters do that to try and win over hens. My Barred Rock does it as does my silkie rooster. They will get into a nest, call the hens to come and see it, set it up all nice looking, and then when a hen comes they try and say "well, I've made a nice nest, might as well raise my babies in it!"

It does look really funny though and for a while I thought my silkie rooster was going broody!

I am in. Not going to miss this one. Hope find some of those cotti colored egges But I cannot remember what chicken lays them. They more brick red colored a friend wants some. Anybody know what they are?

Welcome! So glad you could join!

I know that breeds like Marans and Welsummers lay dark eggs, often with a red color to them.

That's actually kinda cute!

My Icelandic roosters do this. I think they are making sure it is safe and letting the hens know it will be a good place for the eggs. I don't see mine do it except when I put a new nest in or replace the hay in the nest boxes. It is though the hens need the okay from him. Nothing better than a good rooster....or worse than a bad one.
