Help me!!! I've got

.... I woke up at 3am just to make sure my dream about finding 30 pairs of little

watching me from incubator on day 19 was just a dream. Then I fell back to sleep just to dream I was IN the egg about to hatch.

I've lost my mind.

Don't we all dream about chickens?

My husband caught me in the middle of a very intense conversation with my rooster Big Red the other day. He looked at me have me a big hug and said that he loves me no matter how insane I am. Lol

Lol you guys are cracking me up!!! I'm a California native. Was born and raised in Sacramento. I never knew what "cold" was until I moved east! Waaaah!!!!!We grew up making "a day of going to the snow"!!! When you live in it,it's annoying!

I'm an hour east of Sacramento. I hear ya! God forbid if I ever move out of CA. We keep talking about it, as the taxes here are crazy, but haven't decided on it yet.

We go to the mountains (of Ca) frequently. Over Christmas, it was 6 degrees. That was really darn cold!

As an Iowa native, now living in Wisconsin, cold tolerance is a given. It's a balmy 18 this am and dropping. However, from the other end of the scale, I lived west of Phoenix for 4 years. I was amazed a the heat tolerance I built up! On the flip side, when I left AZ, moved to Indianapolis (which is quite temperate in comparison to the frozen north), I felt like such a wuss. I remember it being like 50 degrees out and I literally had on a winter coat and my nose was ice cold to the touch. How embarassing for a native Iowan! I've since adjusted back and am back to tolerating the cold quite well, but not quite as well as I used to. On the up side, I've held on to some of that heat tolerance, not nearly so miserable in the summertime now.

Another question....Do ducks count in the flapping wings picture contest? Or,just chickens? Are ducks considered a fowl? I know,that's quite sad that I have to even ask!

@Sally Sunshine Did I mention I was in with 12+ blue laced red Wyandottes, 12 australorps, 8 silver laced Wyandottes and 24 lavender Orpingtons...? Between my other Crazy Chicken Lady (CCL) friend, @VeggieMinette , we are splitting the eggs up and filling in with silkies from @Jessimom ! Wish us luck!

I have a dozen true Ameraucauna eggs to pick up next week, and since Im a novice at incubating, Im thinking of having the professionals hatch the eggs for me in the coop. I really want these eggs to hatch, and think this may be my best bet, especially since I have 3-4 hens that want to be broody right now. Only concern I have is that it is still winter here in Western NY, and we are expecting subzero temps this weekend. Any thoughts ?

I am doing a test run in my incubator right now, I placed 6 eggs, all were fertile, but it looks like I have 4 quiters now, not a real good percentage there, that's why Im thinking have the girls hatch them out.

I hope you have some broodies, I dont know what to tell you about the cold to come at the end of the week.... have you calibrated thermo/hygros? is there something we can help you with as far as the incubator?

Well I gotta say as much as I love you all you are all sounding like big babies to me about the cold. Lol I'm in southern WI and with the last cold snap we had wind chills around -(yes that's negative)30 it really not terribly uncommon here most years in January and February. Don't get me wrong I am born and raised from here but its still unpleasant. It's so cold exposed skin gets frost bite in minutes, your sinuses seemingly freeze and you can't smell, the wind steals your breath and the cold air burns. Trust me from someone with asthma days like that make walking out to the coop a major labor of love. Lol and don't worry you'd better believe I complain when its that cold. For instance tonight so far it's 17* but feels like 2*. After a 40*+ weekend that was rough.

I'm just glad that we got the coop cleaned and dusted before this cold snap. BTW upon inspection nearly all of our thirty birds had a mild case of mites while maybe two had a moderate case. I can't wait to be done with the next mite treatment.

Oh and an update on Jasmine, her crop was finally completely empty tonight so we left her out and gave her food, she will be checked at least five times a day for several more days, but she is finally pooping again as well something I haven't seen in days. I'm afraid to hope but I know that all of this is a good sign especially the about 15(maybe more) piles of poop that were in her crate this evening(we locked her up again at 5 and found the poop at bed check). We will be sure she gets good nutrition food along with her continued vitamin, electrolyte, and probiotics powder from farm and fleet-the bottle says it stimulates digestion and appetite as well(Performance Poultry by Durvet)

Yep, ducks, geese, turkeys................they all count as long as they are your birds.

If your broodies are committed, they should do fine. Have these birds been broody and hatched chicks before? I'm always careful in giving eggs to a first time broody.

Domesticated Fowl = tame and kept as a pet or on a farm.
