The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

My loud cheeper didn't make it. I know someone posted and said they associated that sound with being cold, but they chicks are under a "brooder hen" and it's toasty warm underneath. The other three are quiet, eating, drinking, tussling. I knew the SLRW was not good, but I just didn't see why. No pasty butt, no panting, no visual issues. I felt like she was a bit lethargic last night and gave her some Nutri Drench before bed. She was alive this morning, but must have passed away in the afternoon while I was at work.

I know that's the way it is, but this is the first time I lost a chick that wasn't directly due to shipping. Just makes me wonder if I could have done something differently.
Sometimes they just aren't strong enough. So sorry.

Quote: I was wrong, I think there were actually 4 in there. Two white chickens, one brown chicken, and the duck.

Yes, but you said how many hens are in there. Unless a duck is a hen, there are 3.

Here are my 5 new arrivals that came this weekend.
Cuties!

Six out of eleven ducklings hatched. Of the last five one was a quitter and four were shrink wrapped. My own fault for opening the brooder to often to help Sticky, but six is not bad for my first duck hatch. They sure are a lot quieter than chicks. Friendly Little suckers.
Good job! Sorry about the shrink wrapped ones.

Good news!! My eggs are in route !! Can't wait till I can find out what I'm getting for my secon dozen !! First doz is EEs and I ask him to mix second dozen so it's a suprize for me I never thought I could get so excited about a dozen eggs!!
Super exciting!

On a random subject change, kidney stones stink.

Good thing my FIL is a massage therapist...
Owie! Hope you feel better soon!

I want to be in the Hatch Along, I will fill up my incubator.. it holds 48 eggs. I know that I will have 8 Mille Fleur & Golden Neck D'uccle eggs and probably just a mix of what ever I have, Oh I can't wait.
Welcome!

When I find a loud cheeper, I find them and give them a drop of poly vi sol baby drops without iron. It must work because they don't usually die on me.

Just hatched chicks have a three day period for their organs to start working. If there has been organ damage(more common with shipped chicks), then they will die close to the three day old age. If they make past there then the next problem is usually at about 6 weeks old when cocci can get them.

For the Easter hatch, how many eggs are people putting in on Saturday? What type of eggs are you putting in?

I'm putting in three dozen eggs this Saturday, they are a mix of silkies, polish, and frizzles.

I'm planning on putting in 30 eggs on Saturday. I'm hoping that I'll have them all sold when they hatch out, since I already have 24 chicks and 5 ducklings. :) I have a mixed flock including: 1 Araucana rooster and the hens are 9 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Araucanas, 2 Barred Rocks, and 1 Rhode Island Red.
