Just a quick little update. Candled last night all 10 black orpingtons are developing nicely for shipped eggs. I have 3 that have slightly saddled air cells, hopefully they will do okay.

Interesting looking incubator. How well does it work for you?

Sorry you lost a bird. The good news: so far I have only pulled 3 infertiles! That brings my total to 69 still going.
The bad news: I lost one of my color project birds last nightthankfully I have 7 eggs developing normally from that pen, but it still stinks to lose one.![]()
Honestly, I don't candle much. Usually just right before lockdown to remove the quitters/clears.I put 35 eggs in the incubator for the hatch-a-long. Now I have a question, is it necessary to candle and when is the best time to candle?
Melissa
The chick will be blue or black. Is there a thread on BYC to ask what a hen/roo cross might look like? My favorite egg in the bator is Blue Andalusian crossed with a Black Copper Marans roo. The egg is white and so easy to see through when I candle it. I love the little chick inside already! I'd love to see what he or she may look like.
Also, the humidity dropped into the 20's with no water in the reservoir, so I added a bit. I'll just have to keep an eye on it. Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback this morning!![]()
Me too. I lost all of my males and I really miss them. It's wayyyyy too quiet around here. I can't wait for these chicks to grow up and give me some crowing!I personally love the crows.

Thanks, but my orps are doing pretty good. It's my older free range Cuckoo Marans rooster who isn't getting the job done. My free range flock is just an assortment of different breeds of chickens that I keep as layers. I should still get some Silver Laced and Buff orps from the eggs I set for the HAL. And maybe even a few from my free range flock.Orps are big birds and may need some feather trimming on their rears to make contact for mating.
