The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Me, I candle whenever I jolly well want to. Too much fun to take the boring route and not candle.

Candling is fun!

I know Australia has blue bees. I've never had sourwood honey, but oh my gosh, the honey is the best! Ours is mostly blackberry honey, but other plants contribute too, so it's "wildflower" honey. California is not the best for honey production, but I did get 2 harvests last year, totaling about 5 lbs of honey. See, now y'all got me talkin' bees!
How many hives do you have and what style? Langstroth or Topbar?

Hey.................bees lay eggs too.  And it takes 21 days to hatch a bee, just like chickens. (except drones and queens, they are different time to hatch)

My hubby just said, " Hey bees are poultry too! They have wings, they lay eggs and they give golden goodness, they just don't shell it out everyday!" I love my husband! :gig

I ended up with 13! Two partridge chauntecler x naked necks eeee i love them!! <3 the rest mutts its looks like of naked neck & orloff roosters over chauntecler, black copper marans, and olive eggers. I also have a silver salmon roo over a buff orp, a splash marans and an olive egger and those chicks look cute too but i dont think any of the orp eggs hatched :( i also got 4 cream legbar female chicks but one was dead tonight when i went to check on them :( poor dear. I have more of all of those plus! Finally! My bantie frizzle cochin roo has been able to impress my bantie easter eggers and i have more eggs in the bator! And they are developing! Does anyone know what to expect from a frizzle cross like that? I know the blue/black thing has a % you can expect. I know they wont all be frizzles, but will any be non frizzled cochins? The hatchalong was so much fun!! Thanks guys!

Candling is fun, especially the first one. Something about the atmosphere when lighting up eggs in a dark room and seeking new life that seems almost magical. It's kind of like looking into a crystal ball. The second candling isn't as fun, but it still IS fun. I just candle twice during a hatch: day 7, and day 14. I think I may start candling at lock/down (day 18) to make sure the air cell is upright. I don't know if that is necessary, but it's another excuse to candle!
