The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

I’m using a heat plate from comfortchicks.com it doesn’t have setting on it’s own, but i use an additional plug to tune it down.
brooder plates are not supposed to heat the brooder. They should be warm to touch though. The Premier1 plate is warmer than the brinsea plate.

Make sure that the plate will not burn the chicks. Don't worry so much about the temperature at the chip level.

It sounds like you have the plate set too low in height.

To repeat, the plate warms the chicks and not the brooder. You do not need to monitor temperatures in the brooder and you do not adjust the plate temperature based on brooder temperature.

I have both the small and the large Premier 1 heat plates. When I have staggered hatches, or bantam and large breed chicks together, I just keep one side of the plate lower than the other. The small chicks go to the lower end, the large ones to the higher. I current have one 8 week old pullet, 12 five week old chicks and 11 eighteen day old chicks in a grow out pen. About 5 of the youngest chicks sleep under the large heat plate. The rest all sleep in a big pile, right NEXT to the heat plate. I raised it higher, then nobody slept under it. I lowered it again, and 5 of the babies started sleeping under it again. Our nights have been dipping down to the 40's, so it's chilly out there. But, if you have enough warm bodies, they seem to think they don't need the heat at all.

For my easter week hatch, I just pulled 5 of the 10. The 6 eggs I sent to a friend's classroom hatch, are 5 of 6. Same sets of eggs. I think I did something wrong with my set of eggs. I've never had that many blood rings in one hatch.

Sorry to hear about Anna and Asta. :( I too have a 10 year old chicken, she is the last of my original flock, a hatchery Light Brahma named Marshmallow. (hey, the kids were little then and named her:lol:) She lays an occasional fart egg, but I haven't gotten a regular egg out of her in many years.
@Cynthia12
I had to go back and change his age...he will be 8 at the end of the month.
I must have been counting hens/pullets in my head when I typed his age.
He is still a handsome guy. I'll try and get a pic this week.
