The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Joining late! I've got 14 eggs in the bator due on Easter. 5 from Whole Foods which are developing perfectly and will be Leghorn x's and 9 shipped colorful eggs 8 of which have horribly wonky air cells and were mistreated by the post office, so we'll see. When I realized the air cells were saddled I switched them up right. Anyone have luck or tips hatching saddled eggs?

When I hatched the Whole foods chicks, they killed each other. I do not know why exactly but it was gruesome.

It happened when they reached egg laying age

OMG That's insane! These are from Rock Island... Is that the farm yours came from ronott1
Yes! The eggs were brown.

I think it was one pullet that started it. I still have one of the hens from that hatch--It was the NYD hatch from 2017. Hopefully yours will be fine.

I have had better luck with the trader joes eggs from the same farm. The TJs eggs are white so Whole Foods use brown egg laying hens with white egg laying breed roosters; TJ's uses the opposite. They are Hy-line commercial layers

Update! I have been very busy with work so I am giving you all and update on my hatch.:jumpyMy one chick that did hatch ( Easter Egger named Hatchley) is doing extremely well. I did go and get him a friend to grow with ( Barred Rock named Dot).:hugs They are the same age and are growing like weeds in their small brooder. I am blessed and so excited:celebrate to have hatched one of my own. Thanks everyone for all your help and advice during this time. I will post pics of my little bunch hopefully this weekend.:pop They are about 5 days old and seem to be enjoying life. Thanks again to you, all my friends!:caf:thumbsup

Aggghhh! Well someone in my local poultry group hatched them and didn't mention anything like that, she has pics of the adult hens, but I'll keep an eye out for pecking!

Can't wait to see them! :wee

Brinsea brooder plate as an alternative to the heat bulb. It seems that many on here do a DIY with a heat pad from a store.

Both have advantages from heat bulbs.

I have two of the 20 plates and one of the small premier1 plates.

Good video about the brinsea plate:

I just got a Premier 1 for 50-55 chicks. I picked it because each leg can be individually adjusted. I can set it low on one end and higher on the other so they can decide what level of heat they want.

I'm bad. shame.gif

I've started collecting for my next round of incubation... 5 buckeye & 3 chantecler so far.

I like the premier plate better than the Brinsea plate.

I also have the top that keeps them off of it
