The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Question. How long after being laid are eggs able to hatch? I ordered some eggs on eBay (stupid, I know... but they were cheap. Now I know why... :rant)
And it took him about 2 weeks to actually send them to me... after telling me they were all packaged up and ready to go. :he
(Thank goodness I found someone here on BYC to order eggs from! Great service, and super prompt! :love)
I’ll be setting either 8 or 12 eggs tomorrow at noon, depending on whether or not I decide to set the eBay eggs.
I have bad news with regards to eBay eggs.Eggs usually need to be started within a week I'm guessing 10 days would be limit.14 days will be nearly impossible you will probably end up with a lot of exploding eggs.I had my bad experience with eBay eggs last month.Nothing worse than cleaning incubator after rotten egg explodes inside.

Set my eggs at 10:27 AM 11 of march nz time, 10th of march american time.
8 Barnelvender crosses, possibly purebreed. I got them from my neighbour, as the lady mum had organaised with to get silkie eggs from forgot to put the eggs in her mailbox, so that was that. So we got eggs from our neighbour. He has a barnelvender rooster and two hens as well as a couple of barred rocks and a few marans. A few of the eggs (about three are pretty dark) They're under my favourite broody bantam cross, Misty. I'll post pics when I take some.

Hopefully they kept them cool & rotated. I believe they sold them before they laid them. And then they stopped laying for awhile. Happened to me.

Now that we have set our eggs.......................................

Some one sent me similar instructions with some shipped eggs. What is the reason to wait? Will they stick to the side of the egg?
The theory is for the eggs to recover from shipping stress. Often the air cells get messed up and resting helps with that. The worst is when the air cells become detached.

A better way is to candle the eggs to see how much damage they have from shipping. The worst eggs get 5 or so days without turning and the best ones can be turned right away.

Eggs should be set into the incubator though. Letting them rest outside the incubator ages the eggs which hurts them too

Agree, when I have eggs that have taken a while, I actually just let them set for half a day..then set. :)
