The adventures of Barbara (BR)

I sure thought it was sweet! When I'm out with these chickens, I see something almost every day that is so sweet it almost makes me cry! I love feeding them treats because I will see the roosters pick up a bit of food and then drop it so the girls can have it. I see it over and over again. Mama with newly hatched babies...will drop the food to them before she eats.

I have to say this thread was a great read- only took me a week of looking at it to make it to page 103!

Now I too want a t-shirt- they are very cute by the way! Can't wait to hear more of Barbara!

Thanks, glad you are enjoying Barbara's adventures. She is currently bathing at the pine tree spa and looks so grubby you can hardly see her white bars. Buffy has joined her and is a mousy shade of gray at the moment—it rained last night. They are having a high old time!

I have several tees and mugs still available. I just sent one across the pond to Fuffy in the Channel Islands, so Barbara's fashions are reaching around the world! PM if you want one!

Been studying BYC for a couple of months. Wanting chickens and wanting to know all about caring for them. So, I study, study, study. Decided to take a break and read the story section for the first time. First story, "Adventures of Barbara". That was day before yesterday. Loved the first story, kept reading and loved the second. Then I looked up and saw it was 111 pages. Oh my! Well, I'm caught up and have enjoyed it very much.

I had time to read due to a broken wrist. Seeing this side of raising chickens as opposed to just reading the problems that some are having does put it a little more in perspective and makes raising chickens seem less intimidating. I keep changing my mind about breeds though and I may have to make another change as well. Those BRs sure sound like characters.

Thanks BYC and MrsChickenDad.

The Chicken Tamer

The Head Chicken Tamer, Chickenboy visited overnight on Friday. He moved the Chicken Taming Headquarters from the Food Palace to the living room. Mrs. Chickendad heard Walter crowing and was surprised to find him sitting on the sofa with Chickenboy. He was being “tamed”. Pretty soon, Walter was exchanged for Bob, but not before he had left something to remember him by. Mrs. Chickendad announced that those who brought chickens into the house were responsible for whatever the chickens left in the house. Chickenboy complied, and a series of roosters were brought into the house for taming for the cost of a half-jar of disinfectant wipes.

Saturday was coop moving day, so nearly every pen and coop was moved to fresh grass. All the Little Bachelor Boys were buka-buka-buka-buka-ing finding goodies in the grass. They didn’t realize that the Little Girls were in another pen across the yard, so all their calling just served to show the other boys where the goodies lay. They are practicing to be good roosters.

Barbara has not had much to do with the Speckled Girls. They are still at Bob’s beck and call, but have been getting braver about venturing around the yard. Mrs. Chickendad came out with grapes for a cool treat, and Barbara was right in front. She gave the Speckled Girl the stink eye before grabbing a grape and running off with it. The Speckled Girl waited until Bob accepted a grape and then gave it to her. By that time, Barbara was back for her third grape. Bob was having to pass out grapes to the four Speckled Girls, and that slowed him down a bit. Barbara and the other Big Girls were certainly not shy and by the time the grapes ran out, their crops were bulging.

Barbara and Leroy ventured into the garage where there were two pens of Babies Growing Up. Barbara had discovered that the Little Babies liked to stand in their feed cups and scratch all the food out onto the floor. It was a free lunch as far as Barbara was concerned. The Little Babies would then cuddle down in the feed cups and sleep. The biggest feed cup had three Little Babies sleeping in it when Mrs. Chickendad went to refill it. This little Wyandotte baby had this one all to himself:

And what a gentlemen is Bob! Maybe Barbara needs to have a little talk with Leroy!? Doesn't hurt to let them know once in a while, that we girls do not like to be taken for granted!

But then again, it doesn't sound like Barbara was going to wait on him anyway!
