So... when I need/want more chickaboos all I have to do is show that list to my DH and he'll think himself lucky.

Out and About
Chickenboy #2 and Chickengirl came to visit this past week. They tamed lots of the “shickies” by perching them on doll furniture and giving them rides in the toy wheelbarrow. They watched new babies hatch, and helped fill up feeders for the Babies Growing Up.

The Chickendads needed food for Barbara and her friends, so made a trip Friday to the feed store to replenish the supply. Afterward, they stopped at a local restaurant where Chickendad ordered the Big Butt Burger in honor of Barbara and her appetite. (You folks in Michigan should try Janelle’s Restaurant in Byron—really good!)

Barbara has been hanging out in the spa with her girlfriends while Leroy keeps an eye out for danger. He has also acquired another admirer, Marion the wheaten ameraucana, who is sort of at loose ends now that Bob is Main Man in the Big Coop. They sleep in the Food Palace, where Marion dutifully walks all the way around to the honeymoon pen to lay her blue egg in the old nest box. In the morning, they join Barbara and the others for dirt baths and bug chasing. Marion has also taken up tightrope walking in an effort to be more like Barbara and impress Leroy.

Over in the Cochin Coop, Buff Daddy’s wife hatched two of Marion’s babies. Three more of them were ready to hatch, but died before they could. That is the last of the Ameraucanas for this year. The remaining two babies are now in the broody coop getting chicken lessons from their Foster Mama. Mama did not want any more children, either. Mrs. Chickendaad took some of the new Mille Fleur cochin babies out to see if she would mother them, but Mama said, “HECK, NO!” and tried to send them back to wherever they came from. Twins were quite enough, thank you very much, so septuplets were completely out of the question!

The Sick Baby

The weather has continued to be hot and muggy this week. Early on, Mrs. Chickendad noticed one of the Babies Growing Up was acting very strange. She put the baby in a carrier with food and water with medicine in it, took it in the cool house and watched the baby.

At first Baby was too sick to do much but take a few drops of medicated water and flop around the carrier.
“This does not look good,” thought Mrs. Chickendad. “Peep Peep,” said Baby.

Mrs. Chickendad continued to give Baby water and made some scrambled egg and cottage cheese for her. “Yum,” thought Baby. “Peep, peep, peep.”

The next morning Baby was much better. Mrs. Chickendad was trying to get chores done and Baby encouraged her: “peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep”. Mrs. Chickendad was thinking Baby was possibly cold in the air-conditioned house, so she put a heat pack under the bedding for her.

“Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep,” screamed Baby. “Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep.”

“That Baby is going to use all her energy peeping instead of getting better,” thought Mrs. Chickendad. “There must be something else wrong. Maybe she needs a buddy, but if she has something contagious it will make the other chick sick, too”.

So Mrs. Chickendad went to the broom closet and spied a bright orange feather duster. Just the ticket! She put the orange feather duster in with Baby.

“Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep”, said Baby. “Peep. . . .peep . . .peep . . . peeeeeeeee” . . . Baby fell asleep. She snuggled up under the feather duster, warm and toasty with her new friend.

After a day or so determining that Baby had just suffered from the extreme heat, Mrs. Chickendad returned her to the Babies Growing Up pen and she rejoined her hatchmates. It had been a successful stay in the Chicken Hospital.

Aw, that is so sweet! Little Barbara is doing very well with her egg laying. No blue ones, but she thinks brown is better anyway. And Little Barbara has discovered that snuggles are very nice. She asks for them often. Her butt still isn't big, so big Barbara's Big Booty record is safe.

Big Barbara has determined that you have to have a pointy butt AND a beard to lay blue eggs. She does not qualify. Besides, she thinks stripes are so much more attractive than beards. Be sure and wear your Barbara tee shirt around Little Barbara so she knows what to shoot for!

Hopefully, Little Barbara will continue the tradition of noble chickenhood as your sweet Ivy has passed the torch to her. Hugs to you all. So sorry for your loss.

Thanks so much. We'll miss her, but little Barbara is Ivy's granddaughter, and I'm very happy to have a piece of Ivy still with us.
