The Sick Baby
The weather has continued to be hot and muggy this week. Early on, Mrs. Chickendad noticed one of the Babies Growing Up was acting very strange. She put the baby in a carrier with food and water with medicine in it, took it in the cool house and watched the baby.
At first Baby was too sick to do much but take a few drops of medicated water and flop around the carrier.
This does not look good, thought Mrs. Chickendad. Peep Peep, said Baby.
Mrs. Chickendad continued to give Baby water and made some scrambled egg and cottage cheese for her. Yum, thought Baby. Peep, peep, peep.
The next morning Baby was much better. Mrs. Chickendad was trying to get chores done and Baby encouraged her: peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep. Mrs. Chickendad was thinking Baby was possibly cold in the air-conditioned house, so she put a heat pack under the bedding for her.
Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, screamed Baby. Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep.
That Baby is going to use all her energy peeping instead of getting better, thought Mrs. Chickendad. There must be something else wrong. Maybe she needs a buddy, but if she has something contagious it will make the other chick sick, too.
So Mrs. Chickendad went to the broom closet and spied a bright orange feather duster. Just the ticket! She put the orange feather duster in with Baby.
Peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, peep, said Baby. Peep. . . .peep . . .peep . . . peeeeeeeee . . . Baby fell asleep. She snuggled up under the feather duster, warm and toasty with her new friend.
After a day or so determining that Baby had just suffered from the extreme heat, Mrs. Chickendad returned her to the Babies Growing Up pen and she rejoined her hatchmates. It had been a successful stay in the Chicken Hospital.
