The adventures of Barbara (BR)

We LOVE the adventures of Barbara and the chickens!

Our neighbor's hunting dog (a shorthaired german pointer) has caught our chickens a few times, but our chickens wiggle out of their feathers and fly away! The dog's owner tried many ways to keep his dog from running after our chickens, in our own yard, he tried and he tried and he was very sorry. He took his dog away. The dog is away for good.

I will pray thatIF your chickens get caught by the hunting dog, that it goes down the same way. The hunting dog maybe cant help it, but she is a hunting dog(with a soft mouth) and maybe can't get a good grip!

And tell Barbara this story, of how Roaster the silly Americauna tricked the dog's teeth by flying right out of her feathers to get away! She left quite a fluffy pile of feathers in that dog!

Thank goodness the hunting dog was not able to get to the girls!!! Now that he has learned how to get out of his pen it is very likely he will be back. I hope Barbara and all the girls will stay safe and protected from the dog and the Neighbor Across the Road will take this problem seriously and be sure the dog can't get out again. Also hope all the fuzzy butts are staying warm!

The girls are all quite snug. ChickenDad put thermostatically controlled heaters in the coops so they come on when the temp falls below 40.

Some of the sex-links are really looking tough after a December moult. I picked one of them up and it was like that commercial when the cat shakes itself and all it's hair falls off. I came away with handfuls of feathers. They look so pathetic. All the Little Girls and Boys look like popcorn balls perched on the roosts.

OMG this is possibly my favorite thread on BYC

What a GOOD Chickendad to be sure the girls are all toasty warm!! It is supposed to drop to possible single digits here by Friday morning, which will be the coldest in something like 15 years. No moisture predicted right now though. When Speckles molted she was SO embarrassed by her bare bottom! It was quite a contrast to her normal, lovely fluffy butt. I would have been embarrassed too! It never seemed fair that she would molt when it was cold and needed all her feathers for butt coverage and warmth! I thought she was beautiful even if her butt just had little feather sprouts....

I also found this thread recently! We just got our first BR too. Contemplated naming her Barbara, but was vetoed by the rest of the family. It's Alice instead. She's about 6 weeks old and not into any hijinks yet!

The Honeymoon Hotel

There were a lot of pounding noises coming from the food storage building. The Little Girls didn’t seem to notice, but Barbara and the Big Girls wondered what it was.

The Food Man was making a honeymoon palace in the food storage building for the Little Buff Boy and his Girl, and for the Little White Rock Boy and his Girl. The Little Girls were both laying eggs, so they needed a place to honeymoon in private.

Barbara and Leroy were not on the list for a honeymoon suite, especially since her stripes ran sideways and his stripes ran up and down. Maybe their babies would be plaid!

The Older Big Girls were in different stages of moult, but the two Big Girls who used to have black feathers were the worst. They were at least half naked and had lots of prickly looking pinfeathers sticking out all over. They looked very uncomfortable. Barbara and Monica roosted on either side of the Prickly Girls and snuggled up to help them keep warm. Leroy snuggled up under Barbara’s wing to remind her that he was her Chicken Man, as well as keep himself warm. Maybe someday it would be warm enough to go outside again.
