The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Big Barbara is glad that Little Barbara is out of her "awkward" stage, although BR's are too cool to be really awkward, ever. It is good to see that she is working on her chicken skills, particularly her Barred Rock skills. Go, Little Barbara, go!

Leroy the Stud Muffin

It is cold and dreary in Michigan this week. Lots of rain and puddles. Leroy and the Big Girls have not ventured out much, except to get their feet washed in the puddles in the pen. Silver and the remaining Silly Ameraucana Sister, together with two of their little girls, have gone to live with another family. Silver and his family posed for a family portrait as they looked out the door of the crate. It was very cute, Dad, Mom and two girls. Unfortunately the picture did not turn out.

Mrs. ChickenDad was rummaging in the basement for something and came across a little piece of red felt that reminded her of an event that happened last year. One of the Chickenboys had gotten a toy stuffed rooster that waddled, flapped its wings and crowed. It was very cute and Chickenboy wanted to see what Leroy thought of it. Leroy was at the peak of his teenage hormone level at the time and immediately took offense at this pushy intruder. As the toy flapped and squawked it’s way across the driveway, Leroy came at it feet first with his quarter-inch spurs determined to kill this rival. He jumped on the toy, and viciously ripped it’s wattles off. The toy lay on the driveway crowing until Chickenboy rescued it from the victorious Leroy. Barbara was very impressed with her chicken man. He had saved her once more!

The Honeymoon is Over

Bob, the wheaten Ameraucana rooster, was not tired of honeymooning, but his wife, Marian was. She was getting a little threadbare. They were moved to separate quarters so Marian could rest up and Bob could share his enthusiasm for flock rooster duties with Leroy, now that Silver had moved on. It seems, though, that Bob is a lover, rather than a fighter and Leroy did not take kindly to this activity. On the first day Bob went out to free range with his new flock of party girls, Leroy made sure Bob was kept away from the Big Girls.

After a few hours, there was a knock at the door. The Neighbor Down the Road was there and said that she had seen Bob strutting down the dirt road near her house, apparently looking for some action. Then he turned the corner onto the paved road and continued. She and her husband were afraid that Bob would become a grill decoration, so they netted him and brought him home. What a great Neighbor Down the Road! The Chickendads will have to take her some of Marian’s beautiful blue eggs.

After he returned home, Bob was trying to figure out how to get into the coop. He had been in the Honeymoon Hotel for some time, so he had forgotten about the pop door into the coop. Bob is beautiful, but when his wheel is spinning, the hamster is dead. He made many trips around the coop in both directions until Mrs. Chickendad came out to help. Barbara stuck her head out the door looking for treats (Mrs. Chickendad=treats) and Bob finally connected the puzzle pieces. All the Girls came out, Bob shot into the coop, hungry and thirsty after his big trip. The girls gave up, went back into the coop and jockeyed for position. Bob sat down on the end of the roost and preened himself. He wanted to look good for his new girls.
