The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Thanks for your concern. I am feeling better today.

Yes, it is scary to think of Barbara unsupervised. However, Leroy is keeping his eye on her. I will post a picture tomorrow.

Leroy is a good rooster. He not only watches out for Barbara but for the four BIG Wyandotte girls who are at least four times his weight. Leroy and the BLRW were hatched together, so I was surprised that he took up with Barbara. Those Wyandotte girls are way plenty for a banty roo. I have a Wyandotte cockerel who looks like he is going to be the size of a turkey, but he is a few months younger, so Leroy can keep his big ladies for now.

It looks like you have gotten some new chicks! Congratulations-I would love to have some Speckled Sussex-they are so pretty.

Treats!

Barbara was angry! She stomped up and down the fence clucking loudly. The food people had not let the girls out for two whole days, and she was tired of being cooped up, especially with those awful Ameraucana sisters. They tittered and squawked about her behind her back and made that annoying croaking sound so typical of silly Ameraucanas. There were four of them now that the two had gotten out of jail. One of them was laying beautiful blue eggs, so she though she was really "Miss Hot Stuff"!

“I do not like this chicken, thought Barbara. “I will peck her on the head.

The food lady saw the girls were upset, so she let them out and brought the “magic bag . It usually had something yummy in it, so every chicken knew (even the Ameraucanas) that plastic bags meant treats. When the food lady came back from the grocery store, all the girls would swarm around her and try to peck all the magic bags she had.

This time the magic bag held spaghetti! It was SO good! It tasted very similar to earthworms Barbara thought, and she had to eat it the same way—from the end. Earthworms don’t fold up well and neither does spaghetti. Even the boys were excited. They made the "I have found something good to eat" call over and over, but then were overcome by the aroma of warm spaghetti and started gobbling it up. It was every chicken for itself!

Some of the other girls were grabbing mouthfuls of tangled spaghetti and running around with it. Wendy Wyandotte even came out and managed to get it all over herself. She got a piece of it on her back, so she kept it for a snack later.

Fern is a daredevil AND a hussy, eh? Taunting that roo like that. What is it with the Barred Rocks and tightrope walking? Are they some sort of throwback to circus chickens??

Eeks! Fence-walking BRs? I was thinking I might get a BR, but I guess I'll have to clip it's wings...

Heehee...noodles.

Beauty and the Beast

After the spaghetti treats were completely gone, it was time for a bath. The choice place today was under the lilac bush. There were several nice holes carved out and Barbara and Wanda (Wendy’s sister) appropriated two of them. A couple of the ISAs were also wanting to bathe, as they are in a moult and need all the help they can get.

Barbara was bathing with wild abandon when a flash of golden feathers caught her eye—it was a Peeping Tom! Leroy was hiding in the bushes watching the girls bathe. Leroy, ever the opportunist, was watching for the girls to drop their guard so he could romance them while they were conveniently in a hole.

“Oh, not now," she thought, “I have a headache." Barbara gave Leroy a sharp peck on the head. She straightened up her feathers, lined up her bars and strutted off. Leroy could wait.
