The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Oh My! Little Barbara is growing up! Such a lovely young lady. I'm afraid Big Barbara has her beat in the Butt Department, though. I'm sure she will catch up soon. . . it is the way of Barred Rocks.

I just wanted to share a photo of one of my 11 week old barred rock...
Gwen standing next to the door to their coop, it's got a painting of a barred rock on one side, and a rhode island red on the other.

Barbara "BB"

Mrs. Chickendad took some mugs out to show Barbara. Barbara’s picture was on the mug, but she did not realize it was her. “My goodness, that chicken has a big butt,” thought Barbara. Of course, she had never seen herself from behind.

There were treats in the mug so all the girls joined Barbara and Leroy and helped themselves. After the snack, they retreated to the Day Spa and took a refreshing dirt bath. Barbara stood up and shook herself. Buffy was downwind right behind her, so Buffy got a dirt shower.

Mrs. Chickendad let the 2 month old babies out to free range for the first time. Their pen is in the garage, but they were afraid to go past the door and spent most of the day decorating the rest of the garage floor in one manner or another. Some of the braver babies got enough nerve to go out on the driveway, but there was scary green grass and flowers nearby, just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting little chickens.

Rocky joined Mrs. Rocky and the Rockettes for a family reunion. Rocky was justly proud of his new family and danced and crowed for them. It has been very hot the past few days, so they spent a lot of time hiding in the cool flower bed. Rocky had been stuck in the pen with the grumpy Red Frizzie who is big time broody, so he was ready for a change of scene. Mrs. Rocky was much more his type, and not nearly so much of a cranky pants.

There were lots of loud noises on Sunday, including those made by the strange people and children around, so the girls stayed in the coop and pen so as not to leave too many decorations on the deck, and also to keep them from feasting on the flowers. They got lots of watermelon rinds in exchange for being so good. Barbara thought it was too hot to do much anyway, but she is molting so that helps her cool off some. She looks like a tattered feather headdress at the moment, with several feathers sticking out at odd angles. Leroy is looking shabby, too. His foot feathers are worn down to nubs and his lemony color is getting bleached out. Well, it is a good time of the year not to have quite so many feathers. Every cloud has a silver lining.

OMG! I have a barred rock named Barbi!! And she is a hoot too! My mom painted a mural on my henhouse for me, and while she was in there my Barbi was "helping". She kept stealing moms painting supplies! She stole half a box of Q tips and kept trying to make off with a red handled paintbrush. She is also my friendliest chicken and likes to be held. Anywhere you are is where Barbi wants to be. There is just something about a barred rock named Barbara/Barbi!

But of course! She is a Barred Rock—it is her duty to lead. . .

She doesn't so much lead, as she does stuff on her own and then leaves the others in the dust. She figured out how to climb the ladder in to the elevated coop today. She sat on the edge and just watched the others on the ground, picking for bugs. She seemed quite satisfied with herself.

Then she sneak attacked them by jumping off the ledge. She's great!!

Got my tee shirt and mug today. Love them. Now hubby wants a set also. He thinks they are wonderful. You did a great job Mrs.Chickendad. Love the feather from Barbara also. Milly and Miltida seem to think they are on they tee shirt. They came up and look very closely at the picture. Thank you so much.
