The adventures of Barbara (BR)

Handsome Charlie is certainly very handsome! And, my dear Mrs.Chickendad, you are a marvelous surgeon! I was reading some of your stories to my sister today - from my Iphone, which is a real trick since it's screen is so little - she would have loved to hear this most recent installment 'cause she is a sucker for all things tiny and vulnerable. Is that spelled right? Anyway, good job!

Here I am waiting patiently for my computer to notify me of a new Barbara story and as I am about to post something I realize I can not depend on this darn thing. Anyway, doesn't it feel good when you are able to help out a chicken and have it get better. I am in to process of making some of those nifty chicken aprons. I took my prototype out to the girls and stuck it on my BR Virginia. Needless to say, she was NOT happy about the help. Here is a pic of her once she finally stopped squaking and running circles around the run being chased by Bosco the rooster who was basically yelling, "What the hell is your problem and what is with the cape?" It was by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I couldn't catch her, I was laughing so hard! The rest of the girls were just trying to stay out of her way as she ran by. It was a barred rock streakin. LOL Something tells me she would rather live with a bald back (look, I spelled it right this time)

I put a saddle (apron) on one of my bare-backed chickens today. The minute I put her back in with the others, the roosters went straight to her and the far end of the apron flipped up. I had made one for a chicken last year, and didn't have this problem. Has anyone ever put a piece of elastic on the bottom corner of the apron, to go down under the chicken and back up and be attached to the other corner? That would hold it down. but might not be a good idea.

Has Barbara started a fad?? Lookit the beautiful dresses everyone's girls are wearing! Virginia is particularly fetching, and I do believe the Chickendads will have to have a Virginia in their flock as well. Such a great chickeny name. Bosco, too! Such a typical man chicken . . .
"What the hell is your problem and what is with the cape?"

Chickfan's roosters seem to agree about the outfits making the girls more attractive. Next time, Chickfan, leave off the sequins and beads so the girls don't appear so . . . .sexy . .

I found that a heavier fabric like denim or duck cloth seems to work better. The fleece ones came off and got full of wood shavings. and were kind of limp. My naked Frizabella ditched hers and prefers to go au naturel. She has two little frizzy tailfeathers left sprouting from her backside. I do not understand how she can look so awful and still have such attitude.

I tried it on her again with a slight adjustment.....she still doesn't like it and I don't think Bosco does either. My Easter Egger Ginger was coming around one side of the coop when Virginia came ripping around the corder and Ginger literally hit the roof. I got a video this time...is there a way to post it here? My daughter shot it so it is a bit all over the place but it is still funny. Maybe instead of Aprons for the girls, we make booties for the boys. Thanks for the compliments on the names. It would be an honor for you to use the name Virginia. It seemed fitting for my BR since she is an American Girl and we live in Virginia.

Maybe a different fabric would work better. I used some fleece I had because that is what I was told to use but I have lots of other things I can try. My roos spurs are huge and very long....well he is just plain huge!

I feel so bad for my girls. He has pulled out some of their neck feathers and a lot of their back feathers are gone. I took the fleece apron off because I didn't want Virginia to hurt herself. I think she has had enough stress for one day.
