Can anyone explain to me what this down color indicates on this Cochin chick?

It appears to be text book Birchen e allele chick down.

Is this barred or birchen? She had a headspot as a chick, but the neck seems more bold than the body

Thank you, that's kind of what I was thinking but I'm not super confident with chick down yet. The farm I bought the eggs from only has them in BBS, White (recessive that popped up in the BBS birds), and Red. Actually, I think she had a group of Bobtails as well for a bit there, isn't that Birchen based or am I misremembering? Either way it sounds like someone hopped a fence at some point to make that little guy.

This is how he looked grown up more. I actually sold him a week or two ago because of his chick down color, as I'm working with BBS specifically right now and didn't want to risk him throwing funky colors down the line. Kind of wish I'd held onto him now... BUT, I'm really trying to focus on the BBS for now and not get distracted with other things like this, so I guess it was a good thing I sold him. I saw no signs of other colors in his feathering even under the surface, though, just solid Blue.

Many Self Black/Blue/Splash birds are based on Birchen ER instead of Extended Black E/E. Many are E/ER and therefore every once in a while a pure ER/ER chick is born. They will develop just a your pure E/E do. They are indistinguishable as adults

Oh, wow, I had no idea! I'll have to keep that in mind if I get another oddball chick like him! Too late for that dude, but the boys I kept in his stead are superior overall anyway, at least to my eye.

Does the reddish color in the face in his chick down indicate that he carried gold or is that just how Birchen chick down expresses regardless of gold and silver?

In Birchen ER e allele the gold and silver is visible. Silver based are usually gray/Silver in color around the head.
