Would this boy be considered Pumpkin, Buff, or Gold? I see zero red on him, he's not rusty red either.

I have a Buff chick that's alot lighter then him.

Will black ameraucanas work for this or should I get a different color? I have the bbs and I'm really happy with my original birds but could source some other color if I'm already ordering the 55s.

Black will work. The first generation will be all black, you take this first gen back to 55 Flowery. Look on the F2s the correct down color, beard and pea combs.

Wouldn’t using silver ameraucanas be faster? 55 flowery leghorns are mottled barred gold duckwing. Silver ameraucanas are silver duckwing. If you bred a 55 flowery rooster to a silver ameraucana hen, the chicks would all be barred duckwing (crele) in the first generation and you wouldn’t have to waste time getting rid of black. The only issue (compared to using BBS) would be getting rid of silver, but a 55 flowery rooster x silver hen would give you all gold female chicks and gold/silver split males, so it would be pretty easy.

Silver Transverse Pencilling looks cool on a black chicken. It's not Psuedo Lacing. There's more pattern coming in on the other feathers.

What causes a non-black skinned chicken to have a black face and comb? I have a Marans that is very dark! And I’m just curious what the genetics are behind it? She’s really striking—is it passed along genetically or sort of a random occurrence?

Do you know what genetics create it? I’ve seen some that grow out of it so just extra something that they grow out of? I’m just mostly curious if there’s a genetic reason for it that’s known or if it’s just a random thing

Well I asked “The Google” and it took me to the Ameraucana Alliance forum I was just on haha. It is a real genetic thing and can be passed on! Super interesting! Thanks, I just needed the right word to use!

I have black comb girls that are supposed to be Marans, also. They're not as dark as yours, though. I can't find any answers about it. Confusing, for sure.

I've had some Gypsy legs! Weird! Dark legs or large, dark, brownish gray patches on legs...then as bird grew & matured, the legs became one medium tone color....no dark blotches.
