Rocko & Henrietta's Flock :

Hello All,

I have a Buff Orpington Hen and a Silkie/Bantam Rooster. They are in my pic.

(Unfortunately the eggs are not hacthing, and I am going to buy her some Bantam chicks).

How has everyone's luck been with Bantams and cold winters? I did not heat my coop last winter, just made sure they had a nice thick bed of straw. He did just fine.

I live in Idaho, and we had a pretty cold winter!

From my personal experience bantam orpingtons are very hardy just like the large fowl orps. I know there are several people out west the do have the bantams and they seem to do just fine. If you are heating the coop I would say they should be just fine thru the winter.

Besides, they are just so darn cute!

What Orp Bantam Project Colors are you working on?

Mille Fleur
Mottle Buff
Black Tail Buff
Chocolate
Lavender
Blue Laced Red - Soon

Would be interested in what breeds/varieties you were using to create these new colors. Can you PM or email me about them? I thought about a Buff Colombian Orpington bantam, but my BC Wayndottes were not quality enough to use. It is easier to use a Wyandotte on an Orp, as type is close in bantams. Once you eliminate the yellow shanks, you are about done with it. Is yours a true Chocolate or the Dun?

There is a BYC thread about the creation of a Red Orpington. They are suggesting a Speckled Sussex X Buff Orpington cross. Type is similiar and you have the single comb and white skin/shanks.

Beware of those Buff Orpington Bantams. They will steal your heart. It was 1981 when I found my first ones and have had them ever since. At least until Nicole (6) STOLE them from me! Any new BOBs that hatch she claims. She calls them Bobs...Buff Orpington Bantams. If you get our eggs and a very scribbly BOB is written in pencil, you know Nicole gathered the egg.

Nicole and her BOBs....

The bad part about trying to use SS to create a solid red is that you will have the mille gene to try and get rid of. To me they are more suited for the mille fleur projects as that is what they are. Though that is not what I used in mine.

Well, now I'm down to ONE little blue pullet; they also got a couple of my black hens, unless they're sitting snugly somewhere safe (gee, I sure hope so!).

Thinking I will be building framework for half my carport and wiring it in....sides and bottom!...until I can get a *real* coop built. Not going to be easy with only one useful arm!
