The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

Pics
My daughter wants to get involved with 4-H chickens (in addition to her many other 4-H projects). After much research, she has her heart set on Bantam Orpingtons! Knowing that she will want to show her pullets, where do we find the chicks? Where do I start? We are in central Ohio.

Thank you, very much! We found another 4-H family to split an order of chicks with. Hopefully, I will end up with 6-7 pullets. They don't mind taking the boys. Probably not show quality, but since I don't even know what that is... We'll start with this and learn as we go.

Any advice for books or information to learn about Bantam Orpingtons- about showing them, optimal care, etc? There is a Poultry show in Columbus OH in a couple weeks -- hope to learn a lot!

Both Ideal Poultry Farms and Cackel Hatcheries acquired their Buff Orpington Bantams from exhibition breeders. You will have to get 50+ chicks and cull very heavy to get any real quality, but then thats what we all do with our own stock. I would suggest the following for a 4H member to learn the basics of showing.

There are no books on showing Orpingtons, but both the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association have books available on their websites. http://bantamclub.com/site/

There is also an APA-ABA YouthPoultry Club that has lots of helpful articles at http://www.apa-abayouthpoultryclub.org/

Do not buy from hatcheries if you want to show birds, it doesnt matter whether their stock originated from show stock or not, they produce for quantity not quality.

OK, I have seen some pretty amazing pictures of every ones Bantam Orpingtons, and they are beautiful. I am going to share pictures of our only Orpington. We got him at a feed store last spring, and they get their chicks from Ideal. So, he is not from a nice breeder but from a hatchery. He is definitely not as nice looking as some of the ones that I have seen on here, but we LOVE him. It is because of this rooster that we decided we want to start breeding this breed. At first, we wanted to get rid of him because he was so mean. I had to wear gloves if I were to go anywhere near him. But we had him in with some OEGB Bantams, and once we separated him from the those he mellowed out. He is super friendly, and comes running every time he see us, we love how he coos and caws. This breed is perfect for my 4-H boys. Here he is, Opie, with my adorable son.

I just bought a new Hova-Bator 1588, and I am dying to use it. I know that there is no guarantee on shipped eggs hatching, but do some make it? I can always get more from the feed store but we really want to hatch some out.

Yes, shipped eggs can and do make it. Things to consider when buying eggs is the overall health & environment of the parent stock, weather in that location, and how a seller packs. But yes shipped eggs can hatch. You know, once you start with bantam orps you just can't stop!!!
