The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Well, we have a nest full of babies ! I cant see how many have hatched so far, due to mama being very protective. ( I have the bite marks on my hands to prove it lol) I will post some pics when she comes out of her nest box with her new family !

Congrats!!!

I have a 3 day old nest which now has 12 eggs in it. How long can these eggs sit before they are no good for eating? I'm not sure the nest is abandoned because I occasionally find one of the ducks sitting on it, just not consistently. I have my 3rd nest of ducklings now 5 days old, which is pretty good for Runner ducks (3 out of 9 hens) considering they are reportedly "poor to fair" at hatching and raising their own.

Here they are, one day old, except for one who hatched late this morning. It was starting to get shrink-wrapped, so I helped it a little, and now it is happily cuddling and playing with the others. We started with three rouen eggs, three magpie eggs, and three runner duck eggs. (there was one, but Jack laid two more). Two eggs were bad during the hatch, and there is one egg left in the nest that Jack is not ready to let go of, but it doesn't look good. I'll probably take it out tonight or tomorrow morning. Jack is a runner duck. From the eggs, it looks like all the rouen eggs hatched, and the others are questionable. (2 magpiie, 1 runner?) Who knows. The dad is either our Pekin or Buff duck.

I sometimes get mine once a week and there fine. You can always do the water test if your not sure. Put the egg in a glass or bowl of water and if it sinks, it's good and if it floats, it's bad.

@HooliganChicks -the ducklings look adorable
