The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

I think our cayuga raven went broody!!!! We seperated her from the drakes today and she already laid an egg I think they drove her crazy!!Also is it normal for the drakes to try drowned her?

Also I thought she was gonna kill the pekin ducklings when they got close her and that egg.

I thought my drake was trying to drown my girls at 1st, but found out that's just how they mate. Also it is better in the water, less chance of injuring their legs. Mine has held a girl underwater so long sometimes I will go at and yell at him just for my sake. lol

Thank goodness Muscovy drakes don't work together like other breeds of ducks, I don't think my heart could take seeing more than one drake trying to mate with a duck. Scary. In the wild Mallard drakes can and do drown Mallard ducks. When more than one tries to mate at the same time.

One of my Blues hatched 4 ducklings 6 days ago - 3 blues & a white. Than yesterday this little black puffball toddles out of the nest. I was worried because, being so much smaller, she might be picked on by the others or Mom. Mom does seem to have less tolerance for her, so I spend a lot of time just watching, ready to pull her out if she seems distressed. Then this morning while taking pictures, I noticed in one of the photos there appears to be a little dove or hummingbird at her side. I guess Guardian Angels can be there for every creature, not just people.
