The Buckeye Thread

Well gosh, if you're in AL, you can certainly contact Chris McCary about Buckeyes! I will PM you his contact info. He has some great birds indeed. And is the nicest of guys.

We couldn't agree more. We were able to get some hatching eggs from Chris this past spring and they are as delightful as he is... almost

Just wanted to know when Buckeyes mature? Pathfinders, the ones I purchased from you are 20 wks old. Didn't know when to expect eggs. I haven't noticed the roo with any of the hens yet. I just put a french copper maran in with the flock the buckeyes are in. I haven't noticed any discord with the roos yet but it has only been a couple of days and I don't think the buckeye is interested yet. He is so gentle and quiet. The maran roo seems to be also, but I know that will change when they start competing. So I was just curious when to expect the sparring to begin!

Do you know if this person responds quickly? We're driving about 4 hours to central Alabama and I would love if I could get some Buckeyes on the way.

Mine started laying right around 7 months (approx. 28 weeks). I'm not sure when exactly they started as we weren't expecting/looking for eggs and when we discovered them there were about 5 eggs (from 3 pullets).

Any buckeye breeders around Pittsburgh PA ? I just realized - I can have my mother DRIVE some to me when she comes to visit :)

Thanks for mentioning driving around, for some reason I never put her visit together with pickup up some hens.

If I got 3 or 4 - they could be integrated into the flock .... the hatchery chick that was a buckeye! is now a pleasant shade of very LIGHT orange. That ain't no buckeye ! :) But at least she is healthy so will lay some eggs for eating.

My girl is 24 weeks and laid an egg in the show at 23 weeks old. She has been laying for a while now (at least 2 or 3 weeks). I was surprised!

Sorry I missed this yesterday (I swear, the "subscription" thing here on BYC stops working after a while and I have to unsubscribe and then re-subscribe regularly.)

At 20 weeks they are right at the point of lay, you should start seeing pullet eggs soon!

When it comes to sparring between roosters, I find Buckeye males are generally pretty good-natured. I keep several males in my main layer pen who, as long as they have room to get away from each other, don't fight. You may be ok with the two, but time will tell.
