I totally have to agree. I'm only 33, but even when I was younger, if kids picked on us on the playground, we'd fight back. Not serious violence, but I sure pinched the crap out of some kids! The no-tolerance for violence policies dont allow for self defense. I dont agree with physical punishment by adults, but letting a couple kids work it out on their own isnt the worst thing to happen.

yes and no... way back when we were in school (I'm 37) we fought it out with fists we kicked the poop outta the kids that picked on us our our group of friends would gather round and make the bully crap their pants.. we all stuck together..

now.. the kids bring guns and knives to school. totally different... society has taken the "fight it out" option away from the youth of today.. Just today my son said the police were at his school because someone brought a knife to school ...

we brought knives to school but they were for cutting our apple... not cutting the adams apple out of our class mates

Brought a knife to school. You don't know why he did it. Could be he had steak in his lunch box or apple/orange.

no you dont bring a butterfly knife to cut your steak... and you also dont admit to the school officials that you brought it "in case" the school was on lock down from 10am - 1:30pm.. and I did not just get my info from my son... this is a small town... and with me being a nurse I know a lot of the police force personally.. we spend a lot of time chatting when they bring someone into the ER for an evaluation or for treatment from an incident during the arrest.

Bullying these days has reached a whole new level, it's nothing like it was years ago. And a lot of kids just don't have the self confidence to handle a bully. I know I didn't when I was in school. I'm a different person now, but not back then. I was bullied by one jerk in particular through most of high school. His reason? I irritated the bejeeber's out of him because I was QUIET!!! I didn't act like an idiot like him and his idiot friends and it just bugged the you know what out of him. Seriously, that's the best he could come up with! Talk about brainless. So he made it his job to make my life miserable.

A funny coincidence though: Many years later I found out that someone put this jerk in his place in a not so nice way. That someone turned out to be the man I'd married! What a fun little piece of info to have pop up so many years later.

Has bullying really reached a whole new level? People bully because there is certain things about the other person they find irritating.

Yes, we now have lovely things to expand bullying like Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, YouTube, and so on.

In bold I think is the worst, really. There is where you can publish whatever videos and hey, everyone sees it.

Now that you said it was a butterfly knife and that the school might be in lock down from 10am-130pm makes it sounds fishy. But just saying brought a knife could mean anything.

It's really sad when they bully well, "bigger" kids

There's a difference. If you're being picked on because of what one person is saying, you have the support of what the others are saying in your favor. If you go to school and everyone is against you, and no one offers help, you feel defenseless. Animal and human behavioral studies have demonstrated that the propensity to fight back is relative to results of previous altercations -- if you just lost a fight, or keep getting beat down by everyone all around, you're less likely to stand up and challenge your opponent. When you have kids growing up "different" and hearing all around them that they are bad or evil, they can't build their self-esteem enough to fight back, and instead internalize what they keep hearing until they snap.

The bottom line is that there is no reason to allow a child to be continually tormented. Parents pay taxes to send their kids to school to learn, not to be harassed. Tell me -- if you were at work and a coworker was getting out of line and bullying you, would you just hit him in the face? Or would you report the incident to a person higher up? Which way should we teach our children to behave in school?

does not matter if it was a butterfly or a butter knife.. our schools have a no knife policy... even a butter knife to cut your sandwich... the logic is if something needs to be cut do it at home... and yes this is at a high school ..
