The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

I think something tried to attack one of my rabbits last night, Rabbit is fine, I have a cage under their cages that keeps predators from having access to the bottom, and they can move to the middle of the cage to go untouched from predators. I found the feeder and water bottle knocked off one of the cages. Rabbit was just fine, he was hopping around normally, no panic. Seemed happier than usual even. But I had to put the feeder and water bottle back up. The Rabbit Pen is near completion. I can only really put one rabbit in the pen at a time but I can hang a cage in the pen so no predators can access the cage.
You sure the bunnies didn’t knock it down? Mine go mental at night and throw everything. We call it a rabbit party 😂 That’s why I give them paper towel rolls so they fling those instead.

There could’ve been a predator though... do you have a game cam? Set one up and check it out.

Nope, not sure at all, I considered that first but seeing where things landed and how the cage below the cages had been moved and the rabbits can't even touch that, and other things knocked over on the ground around the cage, I came to the conclusion that a predator is slightly more likely. Tonight will be a Field Cam night, and the next night will be a baited trap night. I put up the cat food before I go to bed shortly after sun set, 2 nights ago it was gone and it was more than my cat can eat, a good indication I have a Raccoon or Possum stalking the property at night.

So I can not rule out the rabbits did it but evidence leans slightly towards predator.

Tonight Field Cam, and the next night possibly the Have a Heart baited trap.... possibly the Rabbit Pen will be finished by then.

I have 3 bunnies!!

Just thought I'd pop in and say hello! We have a family rabbit. He is a False Netherland Dwarf, I think. His name is Charcoal. He is beautiful!
Welcome! Your bunnies are very cute! Please, post some pictures of Charcoal!@DanielleGut, how old are your bunnies? If they are different genders, you may need to separate them soon.

What do bunnies eat in the wild?

Greens, foliage, berries, hay... they don’t eat manmade pellets full of additives that aren’t even meant for bunnies.

Anyone I’ve ever seen like Lennon on YouTube... eats hay and salad daily. Nothing else no pellets.

My last bunny lived a very long time on hay and leafy greens. It lived past 11 years. I never had issues with it ever. The vet always told me leafy greens and hay are a must have. I have a list for herbs, veggies, and leafy greens bunnies should eat daily from the vet.

Everyone does their own thing, but I take my animal advice from our vet. They specialize in small animals, reptiles, and most domestic animals.
Sorry for not getting back to you, but thanks for replying!

I try to keep my rabbits' diet as natural as possible, too. They'll get some greens/weeds from my mom's garden occasionally, and we do give them lettuce/greens sometimes when we have it. I kinda see the pellets as a supplement, they are also timothy hay based. But hey, I guess we all do it a little differently lol.

Honestly, I like giving them greens and my buns enjoy getting them. However, when I was a kid most folks with bunnies did like you do. From what I read it gives them more moisture in the diet which is good for their kidneys and bladder. In the wild they eat a variety so I like to do that for mine.
Sorry for not getting back to you, but thanks for replying! And yeah, I try to keep my rabbit's diet natural. I should probably give them more weeds/safe plants from my mom's garden. We are moving soon so there'll be some changes to how my rabbits live, since I'll be making them a run to stay in during the day. Maybe this will be my chance to change their diet a bit too! :)

about my concerns over a predator. I found out how my rabbit was knocking down his feeder, he liked laying down under it and when he stood up he would knock it off. Its not a regular rabbit feeder which he could not knock off so easily. I do not want to cut a hole in the cage if the cage is a temp home. The new home just needs the door to be finished before it is predator proof. Once it is predator proof I will be able to move in the rabbits but I still need to do some internal work, making stone work tunnels and nesting areas as well as a feeding and watering station. Then I want to mount a cage in there for the male rabbit until I can build the Bachelor hutch and pen for him.

I think they'd like it! Just go slow introducing new things and watch for stomach upset or change in poop.
