*The City of San Diego, California - Chicken and Gamebird / Fowl Law*

It is considered illegal since like 5 years ago.

At least...in the center in the "City of San Diego"

5 years ago, there is this GREAT slaughter house in the middle of San Diego where almost everyone goes to but they closed it down to sell live chickens or butcher to your selection because they consider it "in-humane".
So I would assume its illegal to butcher chickens in your backyard...

Personally, as attached as I am to chickens, I recommend just get it somewhere you don't have to do it yourself. Save the hastle and save the guilt of actually killing an animal...

I live in Carlsbad (north county san diego) and believe I am an outlaw having six pullets I have so far kept secret from the neighborhood. I am hoping to find the "right to farm act" if there is a problem. Either that, or move which I wouldn't mind but I'd rather not have to until I'm ready- not because the zoning laws told me to or get rid of the girls which isn't going to happen. I keep them in an ark- they are allowed out to free-range and I keep everything immaculately clean so there are no flies or smells associated with them that could cause complaints. They are certainly a lot quieter than three of my neighbors dogs who go off at all hours of the day and night on barking rampages.

I live in La Jolla and I have 8 chickens but I didn't see La Jolla listed on this post. Does anyone know if La Jolla is under "San Diego"?

I am lucky enough to have fantastic neighbors and they adore my chickens. Even when I had 2 roosters that were noisy all night long they never complained. Now I only have females. They are free ranging on my back yard but I finally ordered a coop from Horizon and can't wait to set it up for them since I have to walk all over my back yard to find where they are laying their eggs lol.

Any info will be greatly appreciated :)

Boy are you lucky your neighbords are so nice! La Jolla is considered the "richer" part of San Diego and normally they are VERY picky on what you raise, etc. There are some part of San Diego in which you can't own cars under a certain year or else they will look at you weird. But who can blame it...people who live in a million dollar community expect higher standards. Haha

Anyhow, where in La Jolla are ya at? I am shocked you can raise chickens in La Jolla...

La Jolla is not an incorporated city but a community of San Diego so they fall under San Diego city laws. but I would still double check that there are no exceptions for the community of La Jolla in the San Diego laws

KickenChicken.....thanks for the info...I did check the law in San Diego but I could not find any exclusion including La Jolla so I believe I am safe but there was SO much to read I hope I didn't miss anything

Tommy.....I live in the Muirlands are of La Jolla, right behind the Golf Course in Wind and Sea. It is a very nice area and we were lucky to find a property that is almost 1 acre and has tons of yard and a huge back area where I keep my chickens but even though the area is typical La Jolla, my whole neighborhood is very nice. Most of them have been living here for over 15 years and have kids and are very laid back. My neighbor's kids always stop by to get some fresh eggs to bake cookies lol

Actually when we first moved here a few years ago, our neighbor that lives at the end of the road told me he used to have a miniature pony for his grand kids to ride around. That was of course a long time ago but he recently sold his house and we saw the picture of the "mini barn" that he used for the pony and later transformed into a small guest/office space......now that you can call very unusual in La Jolla and oh boy if only I could I would have a miniature pony too!!!!

UPDATES RE: chickens in city of San Diego for
SMALL YARDS .

Hey everyone, got a little bit closer !
message me if you're interested but I'll keep posting news as I get it !

See my post a few pages back on this forum about "permits" for chickens in small yards. I called Bob and left a message - wonder what he is thinking.. I know that the size restrictions for lots in SD are REALLY strict compared to other cities that have chicken laws. (Here it's 50 feet and in other places there are no size restrictions or things like 15-20 feet.. )

Anyways, trying to change the city code for san diego, or at least get them to actually start issuing permits so i can get my babes back !

Hello Kaya,

This is to inform you that your request for a special permit to have chickens in your yard has been referred for consideration to Mr. Bob Vacchi, Deputy Director of Development Services of the City of San Diego. We have clarified with him that the County Department of Environmental Health does not issue special permits for pet fowls or animals in a residential area. He agreed that this is a City issue and they are responsible for enforcing their City Code. He committed to taking the issue from here and will be working with you from this point forward. He may be contacted at (619) 236-5502.

We realize that it took us a little more time to find a resolution to your
inquiry. We certainly appreciate your patience.

I see that you are new to Backyard Chickens!

Didn't you call me this morning to ask about the city laws and stuff? Here is the post I told ya about! Haha. Anyhow, welcome to our discussion! Please contribute to make it a better place.

In regards to the roosters, the only best solution is keeping them somewhere quite in the morning so they won't crow. Even if the law passes for chickens, every citizen has the right to complain about noise problems. Even dogs have to be taken cared of for their barking problems, let alone roosters. Haha. We should really take it easy on the roosters...
