"The day my world turned upside down" story

I ran ahead and almost stepped on a tiny, deaf, blind and helpless wolf pup. The whole scene of the 2 hunters flashed through my mind. The female wolf who died for me… this must be her pup! I nuzzled it softly just as Cody, Fido and Goldie came up to us. “I sure wish Nellie was here… I don’t know a thing about caring for a newborn puppy!” Cody whimpered. I picked the pup up by the neck, as most mother dogs do, and headed out of the open, into the woods. “Goldie and Fido, you are in charge of keeping him safe and warm while me and Cody go search for food for it.” I said very stern to them. My instincts of being protective of a baby washed over me as I licked the pup on the nose and motioned for Cody to follow me. By the time we got back, all we found was a rabbit and 2 small mice. Me and Cody shared the rabbit with the pup, and Goldie and Fido each got a mouse. Times were tough. As Christmas grew near, each night got colder, and all the animals were hibernating underground, so food was scarce. The pup was small, and I could tell it would have a hard time surviving the cold. I suddenly decided what to do. I jumped up, grabbed the pup by the neck and started trotting towards the nearest town. The others soon caught up and asked, “Where are you going?” “I figure that its gonna be harder catching food in the woods, so we have to go to a town where we can find food I garbage cans and maybe someone who will feed us scraps. We may even luck out and find a abandoned shed that we can sleep in through the winter.” I told them. After everyone agreed, we started to jog towards town, excited at our decision to try a new life style of a city dog. Every now and then I would stumble or have to stop to rest… that’s when I realized, that I was getting old. My days on this earth were numbered… and my goal was still to get back to my master to spend my last days with him.

As we approached the town, it was quite quiet. There was but a few shops, and one restaurant, a hotel and a few houses that lined the main street. But I saw trash cans overflowing with scraps of food! Each of us bolted over to one, and knocked it over and started to feast. I went to one that looked the most fresh, trying to feed the pup only good food. I tried to feed him a piece of meat, but he refused. I tried many different types of food, but he still refused. I was puzzled, and just as I was about to call over my friends, a lady opened the door to a house and hollered, “DOGS! IN THE TRASH CANS!!” Quickly I grabbed the pup and ran for the safety of the woods. My friends and I all gathered under a bush and watched as all the people wrapped their garbage cans with rope and put bricks on top. Then they attached bells to the rope so they could hear us even if we tried to get in the cans. Tails down (and feathers), me and my 2 furry and 1 feathery friend walked through the alleys, searching for crumbs and remains. The pup wouldn’t eat anything. Suddenly I remembered what I used to eat as a puppy… milk! I saw a man drop a gallon of milk at a house, ran over and grabbed it. I dragged it over behind a bush. I clenched it with my teeth, and milk started to spurt out. I put the pup up to the pool of milk on the ground. He drank it! I yapped happily and ran to tell my other friends, forgetting that I was supposed to stay with the pup. When I got back, the pup was head down in the milk, not moving.
