"The day my world turned upside down" story

Fido is now the main speaker.

“How could Buddy do this too me? I can’t do this…. He has experience and I don’t!” I thought to myself. I tried to remember what my journey was, but as I trotted through the falling snow, my mind wandered to the past. Buddy had always been there… and now he’s gone… gone for good. Suddenly I stumbled across a hole. “I guess this is the wolf den…” I said shakily and then gulped. Quietly I padded down the dark tunnel. I heard barks and howls of laughter ahead. I peeked around the corner. Wolves were everywhere, some lay in the corners, sleeping, while others ran around playing or playfully nipping eachother. Wolf pups played in the corner, and suddenly I spotted Gracie and Goldie in a cage. Gracie was crying out in pain and howled “PLEASE! LET US GO! I’m having puppies! Doesn’t anyone understand a mothers pain?” The wolves took no notice of her and kept partying. I saw many wolves walk through another entrance carrying rabbits, house cats, birds and animals of all kinds. Each wolf layed his catch on the table and then went to get a drink from a large bucket of water in the corner. “I sure wish Buddy was here…” I began to think, but I pushed that thought away quickly. I will not think of him! I have to concentrate on my mission! Suddenly the same wolf that had attacked Buddy howled a piercing howl that silenced everyone. “Let us eat!” he barked. Soon all the wolves gathered around the table and began choosing their favorite meal. “What about those dogs, boss?” one wolf asked the leader. “Not yet.” The leader growled to him. Trying to think of a plan, I paced the dark hallway, occasionally looking to see if he was opening Gracie’s or Goldie cage. Suddenly Goldie spotted me. I shook my head no to silence him, but he kept his eyes locked on where I was. What a give away! If a wolf saw him staring at the doorway, I’m dead! A wolf suddenly stuck his nose in the air and silenced everyone. “I smell a dog… and not the ones in the cages… a big dog… he’s here!” He growled and all the wolves looked towards where I was!

Breathing hard, my mind searched for a plan, but my brain seemed to not be functioning! I tried to think what Buddy would do, and finally I had a plan! I jumped out in the open and barked, “COME GET ME YOU DIRT EATIN’ VARMITS!” and then took off up the tunnel. “Get him!” the leader yelled from below and soon wolves started to file out of the hole. I heard them behind me, gaining on me, so I ran faster than I ever had before. I led them to a frozen river, but I could still see water moving below me. I had to trust my conscience, so I walked carefully onto the ice. The wolves charged after me, but they went to fast! The ice broke, and I watched from about 10 feet away as the wolves doggy paddled to the other side of the river. Suddenly the ice I was on broke off from the others and began to float away. The wolves laughed from the land to my right but the leader suddenly appeared and howled “Capture him, NOW!” The wolves all ran on the side of the river, trying to get ahead of the piece of ice I was floating on. Suddenly one got far enough ahead that he felt safe to jump! He jumped… and he missed! He landed with a splash into the water right beside me. He paddled back to shore when suddenly the leader appeared, running on the side of the river. I shuttered. I remembered seeing Buddy’s face when the lead dog clamped on to his shoulder. I didn’t want that to happen to me! Quickly I started to put my back feet into the water and tried to paddle to the other side of the river. I would jump in, but hunting dogs like me don’t have long, thick hair like wolves. Suddenly the ice broke, and down I went into the icy water.

“HELP!!!” I yelped, then my head was pushed under the cold water once again. Suddenly I was lifted up. I looked up to see who my savior was. It was a wolf. He dragged me to land and then started running towards the lead dog. “LET ME GO!!” I growled at him. I got loose of his jaws and started running back towards their den. I reached it and darted inside, there were only 2 wolves inside! I ran over to the cages and unlocked Gracie and Goldie. “C’mon!” I barked and then started towards the tunnel entrance. The 2 wolves started to chase us! Goldie hopped on my back and clung on to my wet fur. We made it out of the tunnel and ran. We ran and ran, until Gracie let out a cry of labor pain. “I can’t FIDO! HELP! OWW!” she yelped and whimpered. I didn’t know what to do, for I had never been a dad before. Goldie calmly went up to her and said, “My hens deal with this everyday, its gonna be fine. Now push! Breath!” I gave Goldie a look, a confused yet amused look. “Get out of here if you aren’t gonna help, you don’t need to see whats about to happen.” Goldie told me sternly. So I skedaddled out of there, sorta afraid of what might happen if I stayed there. A hour later, Goldie called me back. I approached Gracie cautiously and looked at her stomach. There sucking at her milk, were 4 beautiful puppies! “They’re beautiful Gracie! What are you gonna name them?” I asked. “I need to ask Buddy first… where is he anyway?” she asked me. My tail tucked and my ears flattened. I explained what happened to them. Gracie looked in shock for a minute, then started to cry. Most people think dog’s don’t cry, but we do. Goldie lied down and hung his head in misery. He clucked sadly. So, as the night grew dark, I bedded down with Gracie and her pups between us with Goldie in the middle, cuddling the pups. It was our first night without Buddy, and I knew that much of the night we all stayed awake, crying softly or thinking about Buddy.
