Throughout the night, I heard coughs and whines from the puppies. In the morning, we found 2 puppies dead. Gracie weeped and mourned. The 2 left were a boy and a girl. “Its too cold. When my hens have chicks they have to stay warm, otherwise they die. Ya need to find a place that’s always warm, otherwise….” Goldie said realistically. So I took the boy pup in my mouth, carrying him by the loose skin around his neck, and Gracie did the same with the girl pup. Both pups were deaf and blind and only made soft whimpering noises. “Lets try and head back to a town… we can find a shed or something to sleep in.” I said confidently. So we traveled for hours until we found a town. As we approached a farm, I saw a old chicken coop. The door was slightly ajar, so I put the boy pup down and walked inside to inspect it. Nesting boxes lined the sides, old hay covered the floors, and small mice scurried about. I woofed in approval, then called the others in. Gracie and Goldie examined it, then nodded their heads. So me and Goldie went out and found nest materials for Gracie and the pups to sleep in. I found a towel in a dumpster and Goldie found dried grass that was quite like hay. The shed was insulated, so it was atleast 70 degrees in there. The pups nestled into Gracie’s belly, thankful for the warmth. Me and Goldie lied next to eachother, grateful as well. I looked at Goldie and he looked at me, we both grinned. The rooster and I had never been close, barely friends, in fact, when Buddy was alive. Now we were like best friends. I decided to go hunt for food. I came back with a piece of old meat, some stale bread and a muffin that I had found in the dumpster. Goldie at the muffin while I shared the meat with Gracie. I could tell she was very sad, what with loosing her mate and 2 of her puppies. Suddenly, a great wing blew shut the door. I tried to open it with my nose, but it was stuck.

“What’s going on?” Gracie asked sleepily, for she had just waked up when she head me clawing at the door frantically. “It won’t open!” I whimpered. “Look out the window, maybe snow is blocking it or something!” she said, starting to panic! I looked out the window and gasped. “There’s a dog blocking the doorway! It looks really sick!” I barked, alarmed. Gracie jumped to her feet, the 2 puppies tumbling away, whining. Goldie was now awake, and comforted the pups. With me and Gracie together, we pushed the door open far enough so that I could get out. The dog was breathing, but covered in snow. I pulled it away from the doorway, and Gracie pushed the door all the way open, making the shed very cold. “Shut the door! The pups are getting cold!” Goldie clucked from inside. I dragged the dog in and Gracie shut the door so that it was open only a crack. We stared at the dog for a moment. It looked like a greyhound mix, young but extremely thin. Gracie peeked at her belly. “It’s a girl.” She told me quietly. I examined her more thoroughly. She had a long muzzle with black whiskers, a long tail, long legs and small paws, and her body had a small layer of fur, kinda of like Buddy’s fur. She started to warm up, and slowly, she woke up. As she opened her soft, brown eyes, fear filled her. She jumped up and ran to a corner, as far away from us as possible. She said nothing, but bared her teeth defensively. Gracie stood in front of Goldie and her puppies protectively, in case this dog was a threat. I calmly said, “Friend, we saw you outside the door and pulled you inside. You are very sick, and we only mean to help you.” She still remained silent and looked around, first as the puppies and the rooster, then me and Gracie, then the chicken coop itself. I knew it was a lot to take in, so I lied down submissively and watched her out of the corner of my eye. I hoped that if I lied down, it would calm her enough to speak. Gracie did the same and nursed her babies. Finally the greyhound let out a squeak and said, “I…I… mean not to bother you, but I… I need a place to stay. I have searched for a place to sleep, and I couldn’t find anyplace and just as I came to your door, I passed out. Thank you for saving me. Do… do you happen to have any food?” “Yes indeed! But first, let me introduce ourselves. I am Fido, that is Gracie, and Goldie the chicken. The pups were just born and do not have names.” I said to her politely. She nodded her head, then slowly said, “Your friend… I have heard of you. You dogs and chicken have traveled far and beyond, and I heard of your fight with the wolves… I would like to tell you that Buddy is not dead.”
